The first thing I did after reading Kelly Siskind’s debut novel (Chasing Crazy) was log into Goodreads and add everything she had listed to my TBR (true story). Needless to say, I’ve been anxiously anticipating My Perfect Mistake, excited to read more from this incredibly talented new author, and honestly, a little nervous that it might not live up to that amazing debut. I’m over the moon happy to say that the nerves were unwarranted because this book was excellent and I’m sitting here now with this giant lovesick grin on my face—pretty darn sure that I have a new favorite author.
Kolton and Shay were explosive in every way imaginable—as enemies first, before that antagonistic fire quickly transitioned to (hot, hot) lovers. Neither of them were immediately likable—to themselves or to the reader—but the passion between them was intense. As they slowly began showing each other their soft underbellies, by way of quiet, tender moments and adorably sweet gestures, I felt myself falling in love right along with them, as they fell in love with each other. The sweet moments between Kolton and Shay are so perfectly written, tucked between these fierce shows of temper and intense physical chemistry, adding balance and heart to their otherwise volatile relationship.
Did I want to shake them both sometimes?
Yes. Often.
There’s a fair amount of angst here, which was sometimes frustrating. But it works. These are two people working through pieces of their pasts that have left them a little bit broken. Part of their journey is to acknowledge, deal with, and heal from those damaging life events—and that can be an ugly process. The end result is completely worth it because what I felt reading the final chapters of this book was pride in how much they changed and learned, an exhilarating hope, and this beaming happiness for each character individually, and their future together.
This book is deeply romantic. I mean, maybe not in a traditional way, but in a quirky, fun way that was completely endearing to me. Kolton has worked romantic gestures into an art form and I felt myself tearing up, heart racing, tummy full of butterflies as he worked to capture Shay’s heart (and in the process, effortlessly captured mine).
It’s also funny. Like, laugh out loud funny. Kolton and Shay both have brilliant senses of humor, but it was the secondary characters that stole the show for me when it comes to humor. In the middle of this engaging and swoon-worthy romance is this whole motley cast of secondary characters who add depth and humor and warm, genuine friendships. I loved them all (and anxiously await their stories) but I feel like Stella was the biggest scene stealer. She made me laugh out loud more than once and maybe even took the crown for biggest secondary character crush.
Did this review even make any sense? I couldn’t decide what to gush about first, and frankly, I could probably continue for days because this book ticked all my “happy reader” boxes. I loved it and now feel greedy for more in this fun new series!
