BLURB

It’s time to rise from the ashes and extinguish the flames.
This is a new start.
A clean slate for not just me or Scarlett, but for everyone else that’s trusted me to make their life better.
Deciding to keep the Atlantic City chapter name was the right move.
Not only is the weight of the members on my shoulders, but the immense responsibility of proving ourselves to the city.
I need the community to accept us, to come to us when we need help, and most importantly, I don’t want them to fear us.
But it isn’t going to be easy.
Nothing worth it ever is.
With a winter storm brewing off the coast, this is our chance to open the clubhouse for people who need shelter.
It’s the perfect opportunity to show who we are.
Protectors. Enforcers. Loyalists.
We have nothing but heart.
The heart?
My Scarlett Rose.
Her support pushes me to be my best.
And right when I think my best is enough, the world falls out from under our feet.
Hell is hot and the flames aren’t forgiving during this journey.
To gain something good, we lose something better.
And we have to rise from the ashes all over again.

EXCERPT

I glance around the rink and notice that people aren’t paying us much attention now. They are having their own fun. A few glares here and there, but nothing too terrible. I expected guns, maybe even a little blood to stain this white snow, but I guess I need to rethink my ‘worst scenarios’ since this is a family function.
“You are a freaking sloth, Boom,” Scarlett says, making fun of me.
“Hey, I’m just careful.”
“You look like a newborn baby deer trying to find its legs.”
“That’s mean.”
“Those are the facts, babe.” She clicks her tongue and does the cruelest thing she has ever done to me.
She lets go of my hands.
“I’m going to do a few laps. I’m sure you’ll be around the same spot.”
“Don’t you dare,” I hiss as she lifts her hand and finger waves a farewell to me. “You get back here. What do I do? I don’t know what to do!” I hold out my arms as my feet start to wobble. “Oh man, I’m going to eat fucking ice. I know it,” I say to myself.
Horrible idea. I should have gone to the local casino, but no, I had to go somewhere festive where the locals like to hang and make my appearance. I’m so stupid. Who is going to take me seriously when I look like… what did she call me? A baby deer?
Rude. I’m going to skin her ass later.
“How you doing, Prez?” Teeth asks, crawling on his hands and knees next to me.
“I’m hanging in there. You?”
“Going to go get me a beer. This is a drinking sport,” he says. Teeth looks up at me over his shoulder. His cheeks are red and the red scarf around his neck drags along the ice. “Join me?”
“If I can get there. Crawling is dangerous, Teeth. Someone could fly by and cut your fingers off with the blade on their skates.”
His face turns white and he lifts a hand. “Help me up.”
“No, you’ll bring me down.”
“Help me up, Prez! I didn’t think of that.”
“You got yourself down there, you can get yourself up,” I say, taking a step forward successfully without falling.
His hand wraps around my left ankle, and I hold my breath. “Get off me.”
“No. You’re going to help me, damn it!”
“This was the worst idea ever.”
“You’re just now thinking of that? No shit. None of us know how to skate except Pulse, who had to be a figure skater in his past life. Help me.”
“No!” I try to shake him off, but that’s useless because it causes me to get unbalanced. “You’re a dead man, Teeth,” I say, right before gravity wins. My ass hits the ice so hard the pain vibrates up my spine. I groan in pain and stare up at the night sky. The stars are covered by thick fluffy grey plumes. The snow lands on my face and it feels like a soft tickle against my cheek.
Teeth’s head is propped on my side as he laughs, and I can’t help but to laugh too. “We are so bad at this.”
“Terrible. Let’s not ever do this again,” I say through broken breaths.

I was on Blake’s radar from the first day of our senior year, when he humiliated me in front of the whole school with a “welcome party.” However, it wasn’t welcoming at all, and it was just the start.

“I’m aware that I’m not the bravest person out there, but I can change. I want to change.”
“Aww, so touching. Do you want applause? Here.” He clapped his hands hard. Each clap brought me more shame and pain, but I didn’t back down.
“You can mock me all you want, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’ll be out of high school soon and won’t have to see your face ever again.” He clenched his jaw. “One day, I’ll be a better person, but you’ll never change. You’ll always remain this horrible jerk without a heart.” Something flashed in his eyes, and the veins at his temples bulged out. “You’ll stay alone.”

“I did not like him.”
Startled, she asked, “Why?”
Helix stopped in the center of the ramp, seeming to consider the question. “I have no data to support my antipathy. It is…an emotional response.”
“But you must have some notion what triggered it.”
“He disrespected you. He interrupted you and misrepresented your work,” he finally said.
“Oh.” She quivered a little over the perceptive nature of his response. It was so good to be seen and known. The longer she spent with Helix, the more she appreciated him. “That’s precisely why I dislike him,” she added.
“How are you acquainted?” He set off again, more slowly this time.
As they climbed, she explained the situation, and Helix let out a sound of pure annoyance. “This is what you meant to avoid by asking me to act as your suitor.”
“Yes. While you’re with me, I won’t have to deal with individuals like Gravitch any longer. I can enjoy the peace and focus on my work.”
“Yet you haven’t worked much since I woke,” he pointed out.
“On the contrary, every moment I spend with you is pertinent.”
Helix stilled then, frozen mid-step, and when he gazed at her, she glimpsed a quiet wound. Did I say something wrong?
“Then staying with me is…work? You do not enjoy my company.”
Qalu felt the sting of that question in her own chest, and too late, she saw what she had implied. That he was all research to her, data to be logged, results to chart. How can I fix this?
“I enjoy spending time with you,” she said quickly. “Currently you’re my favorite person. But it’s also true that your existence informs my work. Which I also happen to love.”
Perhaps I didn’t put that well.
“I am your favorite person,” he repeated—a statement, not a question.
At first, she thought he was questioning the “favorite” part but when she looped the words in her own head, she detected a faint stress on the final word, as if it mattered to him greatly be considered a person. He had been, even before he gained flesh. Yet he seemed to find validation in her assertion.
“You are.”
“Would you say that we’re friends?” he asked.
“Definitely. What do you think?”
“I’m still figuring out what that means. Before, I thought I was close to someone, but I always felt the crushing need to be useful, as if I would be discarded otherwise. I’m not sure how I fit into a world where I receive benefits regardless of my contribution.”
Not for the first time, Qalu wished her touch imparted comfort. “Benefits?”
“You shelter me, feed me, provide for me in all respects. And now, you’ve brought me to observe art for personal inspiration. And yet you ask nothing in return.”
“Your company is valuable,” she said. “So are your thoughts. I enjoy hearing them.”
“I have difficulty adapting to that outlook,” he admitted.
“That you have value outside of any labor provided?”
“Yes.”
“Then…imagine our situations were reversed. Am I worthless if I cannot give you food? If I lacked the resources to continue as we are?”
“Certainly not,” he said at once. “You’re a brilliant person.”
“So are you.”
“Oh,” he said, his voice deep and soft. “I’m…feeling something new.”
“Can you describe the sensation?”
“It’s confusing. But…I’ll try. My chest hurts a little, but not like the pain from before, when I first woke up. It’s something else. I’m happy too. I know how that feels, but there’s more to it. And I want to be…closer to you.”
“Physically or emotionally?”
“Both? I think it’s both.”
At hearing that, Qalu took two steps forward, bringing herself close enough to inhale the scent of his skin. They used the same hygiene products yet they smelled different on him somehow, deeper and richer with hints of spice. “Better?”
“Yes. But it’s not enough. What do I want exactly?” He wasn’t asking to tease her.
Qalu could tell he didn’t know, and she wasn’t sure enough of her hypothesis to speculate aloud, though it seemed as if Helix might be experiencing attraction. The great mothers knew that she was, had been from the beginning, but it was inappropriate to let such feelings flourish. She ought to consider him family, not a potential love interest.
But when he stepped nearer still, she didn’t withdraw. Instead, her head tendrils fluttered up in silent invitation. That was an irrepressible mating overture, and she hoped he didn’t realize as much. Just as she was about to withdraw, his head tendrils quivered to life, and she stilled, scarcely able to believe this was happening.
“Yes?” he whispered.
He’s asking. He doesn’t even understand what he wants to do, but he’s asking.
“Yes,” she said.

EXCERPT

"Makenna..." my father says and I turn my gaze to him. His tone is harsher than it usually is with me and I know that it's due to the men that are sitting in his office. My father is head of the Ceannaire ar chách, the Irish Mafia here in New York. He has been since my grandfather took a bullet to the heart from the Bratva. He was lucky and survived; I don’t know how. Granda says that no way on this earth were the Russian’s going to be his downfall. He’s living life to the fullest in Dublin, Ireland where he’s the head of the Mafia. "Matteo Bianchi..."
My body tenses, I hate the Capo, have since I was twelve years old.
Nobody knows about my hatred of Matteo and no one ever will. I know the consequences of what will happen if anyone finds out the truth about that night.
My father carries on talking, "And I have agreed that our families being bonded is the only way to guarantee peace." I hide the scoff, this is absolute bullshit, there's no way that anything can be guaranteed. It'll be put on hold for a while, but something is bound to piss one of them off at some stage and then all hell will break loose. "You and Dante will marry."
I grit my teeth, I knew one day I'd have to marry, it's the way our world works. A woman in the Mafia doesn't have the life like a normal woman, we're to be seen and not heard. We're to be at the beck and call of our father and then our husband. I've been lucky, my father isn't a monster to his family, unlike some of his men. From what I've heard most of the made men beat their women and children to submit to their wishes. Break the woman so they won't disobey them.
I take a deep breath. "Yes, father." My gaze moves to my brothers who are standing in the corner of the office, they are looking at me with a weird expression. Did they think I'd object? I've not got a death wish. I'm not stupid. I'd never disrespect my father, not in front of his men and definitely not in front of men that are our enemies.
My father nods his head, "You are fourteen, Makenna, and the wedding will take place when you are of age." His tone is darker once again, this isn't for my benefit, this is for the Famiglia.
"Of course," Dante says harshly.
Matteo shakes his head, "As soon as you're of age, we'll have the wedding." He turns his gaze to me, "You can go."
My brothers tense, their hands on their guns, all of them eager to be the one to shoot him. There’s no love lost there and the tension in the room becomes thick.
"Makenna, go to your mother." My father demands and I hold back the protest. I give my brothers a smile as I leave the office.
My mother is waiting for me in the living room. Her hands by her side and a smile on her face. She rushes over to me. "You're finally getting married," she says and to anyone else it would be as though she's congratulating me. To me, I know better, she's been waiting for this day for a long time. Waiting for me to leave the house where she knows that the secret I carry will no longer risk being spilled.

EXCERPT

My breath catches in my throat at the sight of the smile on his lips, and my heart begins to race—either in anticipation or dread. I’m uncertain which one, but this man… he excites me.
“So, this is how you want to do this?” he asks, studying me as he inches closer.
This? What is this?
I hold up one hand, silently begging him to stop. “Do what? I think you should leave.”
“I don’t want to manhandle you, darling, but I will.”
“Listen,” I begin, trying to stall. There must be a way to reason with him. There’s nowhere for me to run.
He chuckles, tucking a strand of hair behind his ear. “Fight me, baby.” It’s the only warning I receive.
He lunges. I jump, but he’s too fast, and I have nowhere left to go. The flimsy lock on the bathroom door would not detain him. Before I can scream, his lips cover mine, and I’m flat on my back on the bed.
He conquers.
He consumes.
He makes me want.
His weight crushes me. I jerk my head to the side, panting greedily. I can’t give in to him. “Stop,” I heave, sucking in a big gulp of air, since I’m pinned beneath his hulking frame. My hands are caught in one of his. He holds me easily enough, his knee wedged between my thighs. I don’t want to hurt him, but if he persists….
My breasts rise and fall against his chest. Instead of being scared, I’m repulsed by how turned on I actually am. His free hand cups my face, forcing me to look at him. I can’t hide. The heat in his eyes singes me alive. There’s no escaping him, and I fight against the urge to rub my body against his. He feels so good.
He drags his fingers down my cheek and then rubs his thumb against his forefinger. Next, he touches my mouth, brushing that same thumb along my lower lip. What is he doing? I don’t have too much time to think about it though. Those caresses of his have my stomach tightening with need. I’m losing my focus.
His fingers trace the arches of my eyebrows. The expression on his face is so out of place with who I imagine him to be. He’s surprisingly tender, and I’m floored by this discovery. He might actually be capable of more than his hard exterior suggests. He’s intent in his explorations, gentle and not missing even the smallest detail of my face. The entire time, his eyes remain locked on mine. All of a sudden, he pauses and then shows me his fingertips, but I don’t understand.
“See this,” he murmurs, and I nod, even though I’m uncertain what he means, because there’s nothing there. His husky voice has me longing to squeeze my eyes shut, to deny how much this man makes me feel, but closing my eyes will not help me forget the weight of his body pressing into mine. Instead, I hold his stare, unable to look away. I should be screaming, fighting him, demanding for my release, but for some unexplainable reason, I don’t do a damn thing. “No artifice. All fucking natural. None of that shit for you, baby, not that you need it.”
Is he talking about makeup? My eyes widen when his tongue darts out to glide along his lower lip. My cheeks heat at the sight, but this is not the first time I’ve seen his tongue. Between us, the air crackles heavily with promise.
“Now you listen to me. You and I, we’re going to happen.” Before I can protest, he’s continues. “There’s no use in denying it. Why do you fight what we both know you want?” He rocks his hips into the cradle of mine, and even though I bite down on my lower lip, a shameful moan escapes my mouth, proving his point.
“Will you get off me?” I growl. I’m so frustrated, achy, confused, and needy, and it’s all because of him.
