How can he be acting this way? It’s hurtful, but he does have to maintain his level of professionalism.
My heart is pounding against my ribs as I sit across from Cameron. My worst fear has come true. He’s going to be my supervising doctor, and he’s acting as though he has no clue who I am.
In the two minutes since I’ve sat down, he’s not looked at me once. His head’s been buried in a document in front of him.
I’d kill for him to look at me once, just once. I long for those eyes to meet with mine again.
But you ran out on him, Chelsea, my inner voice argues.
Since I last saw him, Cameron’s grown a thicker beard, making him look more distinguished but somehow even more handsome.

“I think I’d like to dance with you, too, but only tonight. We go back to our professional relationship first thing tomorrow morning. It’s for the best.” Her words are tinged with sadness, and I feel it too. I don’t want this to end.
As I pull her close, I grasp her hand against my chest as I whisper in her ear, “I’d like to see where this goes, I really would. But as much as I don’t want to, I know you’re right. Professional from tomorrow.” Leaning back slightly, I search her eyes before leaning toward her mouth, brushing my lips against hers.
I’m convinced she can feel the thud of my heart against my ribcage as I pull back again. A small smile appears on her lips as I lean in again to place my lips on hers, this time, gently massaging hers with my own.
Grace rests her head again on my chest, and we continue to dance, even though the slower music has been replaced by something more upbeat.
I’ll dance with her as long as she’ll let me. I want to enjoy every minute with her, especially since I know that I’ll never be able to get this close to her again.

Thud.
“Shit,” I squeal, crashing into the chest of an older man.
“Sorry, I didn’t see you,” he says, grabbing hold of my upper arms.
“My fault. I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
Slowly, I lift my head to see his face, finding myself staring at him through my eyelashes. He’s probably well over six feet tall, towering over my tiny frame.
Quickly stepping back, I apologize again as I take in this extremely handsome man. Silver flecks run through his beard and hair, and he’s wearing a well-fitted dress shirt which shows off his rather nice muscles.
He’s got to be at least forty, Mia. Calm down.
I can’t think of anything to say. So, I say the first thing that pops into my head. “You haven’t seen a tall, blonde girl around the casino by any chance?”
Great description, Mia. That narrows it down to probably a quarter of the occupants.
“No, sorry, miss. I haven’t. The name’s Jackson.” He smirks as he extends his hand.
He’s probably getting some form of perverted joy out of this.
“Mia,” I reply, offering him my hand to shake.
The moment our hands connect, warmth spreads up my arm, sending shivers all over my body.
“Mia,” he repeats, shaking my hand for much longer than is required. “Are you staying here?”
I nod.
