“Jack,” I whispered once he reached the front door. He paused with his hand on the doorknob as I took a few steps toward him until we were only inches apart. “Please don’t shut me out. I really enjoyed getting to know you again over this past month. Now that the circumstances have changed, I feel like maybe we’re headed back to being strangers again. I forgot how much I enjoyed your company, and I was hoping maybe we could have that again—a friendship, like when we first met.”

He removed his hand from the doorknob and placed it on my cheek. “That was a long time ago. Before life changed us into who we are now. I wish I could go back and be that goofy boy you first met. The one who made you happy. The one who made you laugh all the time, but I can’t. I’ll always be here for you, no matter what you need.” He closed his eyes and inhaled sharply. “But I don’t think I could honestly ever be just your friend again because I know I’ll always want so much more from us, something that we once had and still could’ve had.” He dropped his gaze to the ground and shook his head. “If things didn’t happen the way they did.”

I was speechless, not knowing how to reply or if I even should. The whole situation was so complicated and all the memories that had been conjured up from years ago were just adding to the mix. I always knew, even through the worst of times, that I still loved Jack. It wasn’t until recently that I was finally able to admit that I had never stopped being in love with him. That was my ten seconds—Do I tell him the truth and go down that rabbit hole with him once again, or do I let him walk away, parting civilly as two people who were mere acquaintances, sharing a mutual love in our daughter?

Ever since I can remember, I have always enjoyed Creative Writing. There was always something about being able to travel to a different place or become a different person with just the stroke of a pen - or in today's world a touch of the keyboard. I love creating deep characters who you will love or love to hate. Writing is a form of therapy for me, and I’m happiest when a new story starts to take on a life of its own.

My life is not nearly as interesting as my books or the characters in them. I love spending time with my dogs: Bogie, a sweet old Border Collie and Georgie, a scrappy Chihuahua/German Shepherd (yes, you read that right). My happy place is a seat by the ocean with my feet in the sand or on the busy streets of New York City. You will more than likely find one of these places as the setting for most of my books.

As the first drops of rain fell from the clouds, I took that as my warning to head inside. I picked up my wine bottle along with my glass and stood up, sucking in the cool, salty air one last time. Wiping the sand off my backside, I focused my attention toward the water, catching a glimpse of a man walking along the edge of the ocean. Even from a distance, I could sense he was deep in thought. I eyed him up keenly, ignoring the raindrops pelting me in the face. He tilted his head back, looking up at the sky, then turned around in my direction, seeming to be as focused on me as I was on him. I squinted my eyes, trying to get a better look, but it was useless. He had turned away, then took a few wary steps into the water.

What is he doing? It was mid-November. The water was freezing, not to mention the incessant warnings of the approaching storm and riptides.

“Hey!” I shouted, but it was useless. My voice was no match for the powerful waves or the roaring wind. My eyes darted up and down the beach to see if there was someone else with him, but it was deserted. “Hey!” I bellowed once again, dropping my wine bottle and glass in the sand, taking double strides toward the water as the man submersed himself farther and farther into the depths of Mother Nature’s wrath. “Mister!” I screamed, standing at the edge of the ocean as the cool mist from the water shrouded my face. Stepping in farther, I stopped once the water hit my knees, soaking right through my sneakers and saturating my jeans. I remained steady on my feet, battling with the ferocious undertow as I searched amongst the relentless white caps for a sign of him, but he was nowhere to be found. He had disappeared—swallowed up into the depths of the ocean as if he’d never even existed.

“So, Alex, have you thought of any ideas on how to incorporate the female staff into being a part of Him?”
All eyes were on him as he picked his head up from whatever he was paying attention to on his phone. I impatiently waited for his answer, knowing how much he didn’t want for this to happen. “Actually, I have.” He was upbeat with his reply, not at all what I was expecting.
“Okay, let’s hear it.”
“I was thinking about having them do something that’s the exact opposite of what they would normally do and then write an article on the experience.”
“Such as…” Mr. Andrews waited for him to elaborate.
“Like Laurie hates sports, so maybe have her go with Keith when he’s covering a game and write about the experience.”
“I like that idea. What are your suggestions for some of the other women?”
He cleared his throat. “I, umm haven’t really thought about it. I wanted to bounce the idea off you first and see what you thought about it.”
“I love it.” Mr. Andrews adjusted his glasses and looked my way. “What would you suggest having Rose do for her article?”
My face heated when I sensed all eyes on me. I dropped my head and stared at the table, just imagining what horrible adventure he was conjuring up. Skydiving. Fire juggling. Swimming with sharks. The possibilities were endless.

“So, did you have a good birthday?” I asked.

“It’s just another day. Nothing special about it. I’d just as soon forget the day I was born.”

“Why are you so hard on yourself?” I second guessed myself for asking as the words spewed from my mouth.

“You just wouldn’t understand, Samantha.”

My whole life I hated being called that name, but hearing him say it was kind of nice. It was as if it was his and his name only for me. I was his Samantha, and he was my Jaxson.

“Maybe I could try. I’m a pretty good listener.”

He took another sip of his lemonade and placed it on the table. “I really have to go.” He stood up and looked down at the ground.

“I’m sorry. I – I didn’t’ mean to pry,” I said, standing up beside him. “It’s just, sometimes it helps to express how you’re feeling, and I’m –” He took me completely off guard when he grabbed my face in his hands, pulled me toward him, and placed a warm gentle kiss on my lips before smoothly slipping his tongue into my mouth. I was speechless as I pulled in my bottom lip still wanting to taste more of him when the kiss was over.

“You wanted me to express myself,” he whispered. “Well, that’s what I’ve been feeling from the time I walked up on this porch. I wanted to see if your lips felt as soft as they look. I wanted to get as close to you as I possibly could and breathe in your perfume that drives me crazy. And, maybe for one second of my life, I wanted to feel like I was worthy of someone like you. That’s how I was feeling, Samantha.”
