Review - Controlled Burn by Shannon Stacey

Title: Controlled Burn
Series: Boston Fire #2
Author: Shannon Stacey
Release Date: November 24, 2015

Rick Gullotti lives the good life. He fights fires, dates beautiful women—though none long enough so they cast wistful glances at jewelry stores—and has great friends. And thanks to helping out the elderly couple who own his building, his rent is low. But when concerns about their health lead him to contact their only son, his life starts getting away from him.

Jessica Broussard has no interest in leaving sunny San Diego or her cushy corner office for Boston, but her father—who happens to be her boss—dispatches her to deal with the grandparents she's never met. She's unprepared for the frigid winter, loving relatives who aren't the monsters she's been led to believe, and the hot, scruffy firefighter who lives upstairs.

At first, Jessica is determined to get back to her comfortable life as quickly as possible. All she has to do is talk her grandparents into selling their monstrosity of a house and moving to a retirement community. But she underestimates Rick's dedication—and his considerable charm. Nobody's taking advantage of his friends on his watch, even if that makes the tempting southern California girl with the long legs his adversary. Unfortunately for them both, the only thing more urgent than the matter at hand is their sizzling chemistry, and it's quickly becoming too strong to resist.

This was one of the most feel good romances I've read lately. I know that Shannon Stacey has a knack for giving me the warm fuzzies, but this was one of her sweetest. Our hero, Rick, is really one of the good guys. Besides being well built and a sexy-as-hell firefighter, he's also just such a darn nice man!

He rents a room on the top floor of a sweet little old couple's house, and while he's there he does the hard chores, watches out for them, and basically fills in as a surrogate son. They are all mighty surprised when Jessica, a long lost grandaughter, show up their door.

Of course they're suspicious, but Jessica is just delightful. No over the top drama, despite an emotionally difficult childhood. No overblown angst. Just a genuine desire to know her family. Her joy at being welcomed to the community was a pleasure to experience through her eyes, and the longing to remain a part of it, heartwarming.

The chemistry with Rick is palpable, and the mature way they approach their relationship is beautiful. Even when the difficulties of a long distance relationship, and past family grudges, Rick and Jessica remain positive and work together. This is not a book of angst and miscommunication, but a sweet, humorous story of love, with a repeating cast of small town characters thrown delightfully into the mix.

Review - Heat Exchange by Shannon Stacey

Title: Heat Exchange
Series: Boston Fire #1
Author: Shannon Stacey
Release Date: August 25, 2015

Lydia Kincaid's shipping back to Boston, but she's not happy about it. She left to get away from the firefighting community—her father was a firefighter, her brother's a firefighter and, more important, her ex is a firefighter. But family is number one, and her father needs her help running the pub he bought when he retired. Soon, Lydia finds it hard to resist the familiar comfort and routine, and even harder to resist her brother's handsome friend Aidan.

Aidan Hunt is a firefighter because of the Kincaid family. He's had the hots for Lydia for years, but if ever a woman was off-limits to him, it's her. Aside from being his mentor's daughter, she's his best friend's sister. The ex-wife of a fellow firefighter. But his plan to play it cool until she leaves town again fails, and soon he and Lydia have crossed a line they can't uncross.

As Aidan and Lydia's flirtation turns into something more serious, Lydia knows she should be planning her escape. Being a firefighter's wife was the hardest thing she's ever done, and she doesn't know if she has the strength to do it again. Aidan can't imagine walking away from Boston Fire—even for Lydia. The job and the brotherhood are his life; but if he wants Lydia in it, he'll have to decide who's first in his heart.

Hot firefighters. Enough said….

Aidan Hunt is a firefighter and has everything you would want in a strong, leading man, all encased in tidy turnout gear.

Lydia Kincaid has been married to a firefighter. Her dad, her brother, her brother-in-law even, all belong to the fraternity of brothers who fight beside each other and have each other’s back on, and off, the fire truck. Moving away after her divorce was a fresh start for her but now she was back to help run her family’s pub.

She wasn’t planning on staying so the attraction she feels for Aidan is something she wants, she needs, to fight against. Even though there are good reasons to stay away—he is younger than she is, he is her brother’s best friend and, oh—he’s a firefighter, she is having a hard time convincing herself of that.

“Like sticking a fork in a toaster while sitting in a bathtub cocked off your ass kind of bad idea.”

Aidan feels the attraction but also knows there’s more to it than a meaningless fling. Both will have to make some tough decisions before their story is done.

Someone mentioned firefighters and I was all in! Hot, delicious, firefighters… Happily, these firefighters are not only handsome and sexy but also men you would want to take home to Mama.

This is a sexy romance but it’s also a story about family, friendship and the messiness that all entails. Loyalties are challenged and divided and old hurts and hang ups are hard to ignore when strong feelings are at stake. Full of emotion and drama, there are also the sarcastic bouts of humor that keep it from being over the top drama.

“Who is Blonde from market?”… “Wait. I’m the one who called you a dumbass. You have me saved in your contacts as Blonde from market?”
“It’s a long story.”

The story gets a bit diluted by a sub-plot that almost needs its own story, but overall Heat Exchange is a great read and solid start to a new series that is solidly on my TBR list.

I absolutely love Shannon Stacey, so anything she's written is an instant read for me. Heat Exchange didn't have a much of her customary snark and humor as I'm used to, but it was just as sweet and romantic as I've come to expect.

Lydia has been raised in a family of firemen. Her father, her brother, her brother in law, even her ex-husband. She worked hard to leave the small town and the little bar her family runs—literally a place where everyone knows your name. But when she gets a call from her sister, she drops everything to come home and help.

I love the family aspect. They are so real, depending on each other for love, support, and even hurtful honesty. It's when she runs into her younger brother's best friend that everything changes. Aiden has grown up, and oh, what a man. The things he can do to her in a utility closet...

I have a huge weakness for firemen and this book gave me a whole station full! There were really two love stories taking place here, and they didn't disappoint! Lydia fighting herself over loving another fireman, Aiden struggling over breaking some bro code of dating his best friend’s sister. And Lydia's sister struggling to save her marriage. Such a sweet story, I loved it, as I always do with this author!
