Series: The Westwick University Duet #1
Author: Bri Blackwood
Genre: Dark Romance
Tropes: Gothic Forbidden Romance
Professor/Student, Age Gap
Release Date: March 13, 2023

BLURB

Privilege has its secrets…

Westwick University is known for its prestige and pedigree for hundreds of years.
Many people would die to come here…
And some have come here and died.
There are lies buried within these walls that the world doesn’t know about.
But I do.
It’s what happens when your family has gone to the same college for generations.
Stories and secrets are passed down, making me yearn to know more.
I’m determined to discover if each and every one is true, but I’m distracted.
Because my new professor has taken a particular interest in me.
Or so I think.
I shouldn’t be tempted because anything with him is forbidden.
But the way that he only has eyes for me has set me on edge.
I can’t tell if there is something there or if I’m making it all up in my head.
Why would a billionaire, who is known for his solitary life after the death of his wife, want to teach here?
There’s so much I don’t know.
But I know that lies do nothing but lead to more lies.
And when I uncover the truth, the world will implode.

The Lies Beneath is the first book in a dark forbidden gothic college romance duet that has enemies-to-lovers themes. This book may not be suitable for all readers due to dubious situations that might be triggering. It ends in a cliffhanger.

EXCERPT

You will get through this. You will get through this.
This was really happening. I was being auctioned off to the highest bidder. The auctioneer didn’t even turn to look at me before he cleared his throat and started speaking. The small amount of compassion that I’d gotten from Rose wasn’t anywhere to be found. It felt as if I’d been thrown to the wolves.
The auctioneer didn’t bother saying my name when introducing me and gave only my body measurements and a brief rundown of my “skills” that no one else should know unless I told them. The feeling of violation coursed through me as I felt like an intangible thing instead of a person. The thought of that had been in the back of my mind for some time, but not even being referred to by my name was more painful than I’d imagined.
I fought with myself as I tried not to sink back into old habits and thoughts that haunted me throughout my childhood. I needed to stay strong or else I would crumble right in front of all of these vultures who would have no problem eating me alive.
And then I saw him.
When our eyes connected, I could have cried. The vulnerability I felt increased tenfold as I tried to keep it together. Although I didn’t know him, just seeing his familiar face made me feel a million different things at once.
Due to the bright lights and where he was sitting I couldn’t tell what color his eyes were, but I felt drawn to him for some reason. I tried to break the stare between us, but I couldn’t. A strong urge in my body made me feel called to him in hopes that he would save me from this hell.

EXCERPT

I hated that son of a bitch, with every inch of my being. Could I believe I was thinking this about Broderick now? No, but his behavior had put me on edge.
Our eyes met as soon as I entered the bar. Not even the darkness of the environment could prevent the stare down that occurred. His blue eyes clashed with mine and warning bells sounded in my mind.
I pulled at the dark denim jacket that I had thrown on over my low-cut black shirt and jeans with black flats. The perfect outfit for me for this spring evening. I tucked a piece of my blonde hair behind my ear and smiled at the bartender when I approached. I ordered a light beer and received it immediately, basking in the fact that I didn’t have to pay due to my brother having an open bar.
“There’s my favorite little sister.”
I smiled at the moniker. “I’m your only little sister,” I said as I turned around. There standing behind me was my older brother, IPA in hand, ready to be the life of the party.
“I’m glad you could make it.”
“Same, but I wouldn’t miss your promotion celebration for the world. I’m so proud of you.”
I leaned in to hug him and when I looked over his shoulder, I saw the only person who was currently on my shit list.
“Hey, man, congrats again on the promotion.”
Broderick came around Hunter’s left side while I stood on his right. It took everything in me not to roll my eyes. I waved my brother off when one of his friends called his name and all that was left were two piercing blue eyes staring back at me.
“Grace.”
I let out a deep breath. “I don’t want to talk to you.”
“Tough shit. I want to talk to you.”
He had some damn nerve. I leaned over and whispered to him, “I’m not talking to you about anything related to my personal life because it is none of your concern. Better yet, I don’t want to talk to you at all. So leave.”
That didn’t do anything to deter him. “Hellion, if you want to experience Elevate up close and personal, all you have to do is ask. Not entertain the idea of some asshole in a cheap three-piece suit taking you there.”
My mood soured. Broderick had the audacity to say these things, but I refused to sit here and tolerate it. I took another swig of my beer before I put it back down on the bar and turned to him. “Who knew how much of an asshole you could be? Wait, don’t answer that. Have a good night.”
I hoped the bite in my tone told him that I wanted him to have anything but. I made my way through the crowd and found my brother.
“Listen, Hunt, something came up and I need to head out,” I whispered in his ear.
“Already?” The look of disappointment made me feel like shit, but I knew if I stayed, Broderick would be watching me like a hawk all night, which was disturbing, whereas my own brother wouldn’t do this. I also didn’t trust myself not to snap at him again. Hunter opened his arms and I stepped into his embrace. “Do you want me to walk you to the subway?”
I shook my head. “No. Don’t miss out on your own party because of me. I might decide to take a cab. I’ll call you later.”
“You better.”
I gave him one last smile before I strolled toward the door. Just before I reached it, I looked up and found Broderick staring back at me from another corner of the room. He lifted his beer in a mock salute, and I gave him my one-finger one in return. Two could play this immaturity game.
I pulled out my phone to call a car and saw that the wait time was way longer than I wanted to deal with. I adjusted my jacket over my body, applied a coat of lip gloss, and put my phone back in my purse before I wandered down the street. I had walked a couple of buildings away from the bar before I heard a low groan coming from my left. When I looked, I found a dimly lit alleyway, but I saw nothing in the darkness.
Is someone over there? Where did that noise come from?
Although fear swam through my mind, I knew I had to do something. That was when I saw someone leaning against a brick wall and it was clear that they were hurting in some way. As I started to walk into the alley, another figure appeared from the shadows and walked up to the person and the next thing I heard was a croak. The figure backed away from the person, who slowly slid down the brick wall.
Did…did I just see someone get stabbed?
A scream bubbled below the surface, and I knew if it erupted from my mouth I would draw the attention of the person still in the alleyway. Before I could emit any sound or run away, I felt a hand slip over my lips, and another around my waist as I was dragged away from the opening of the alley. That something felt warm against my lips. Since I still had the ability to fight, there was no way I was going down without one. I fought against my attacker, and I heard a grunt before someone said, “Grace, cut it out.”
Broderick?
“Let me go!” I screamed, but it was mostly muffled by what I now knew to be Broderick’s hand.
He continued pulling me back until he whispered in my ear, “I’m going to remove my hand, but you have to promise not to scream.”
I nodded my head quickly and he did as he said he would. As he wiped his hand, removing the remnants of my lip gloss from it, I said, “Broderick, I might be able to save his life, let me go.”
“Do you want to save your own? Be quiet and follow me.

EXCERPT

The demons that haunted my nightmares were supposed to remain there.
Yet, they had materialized into the real world and stole what was mine. There wasn’t much I feared, but my life had been turned upside down twice in recent weeks.
When Kingston alerted me that there was an incident involving Anais and her father and that his team was rushing in, my heart felt as if it were being strangled. It took precious moments for me to reach Rob and head down to the car because there was no way I would stay at my office waiting for word on what happened to Anais. Every second that passed without word made my mind race, wondering if the moment she walked out of my parents’ home would be the last time I saw her. After I was told that although James had been shot, Anais was fine and they were transporting her to a safe house, I felt as if I could breathe again.
Once it was confirmed that Kingston had Anais and she was safe, I knew that everything was going to be fine. I trusted Kingston with my life, and I knew that he would do everything in his power to make sure that Anais was okay.
The slight tremble of my hand as I pulled at my tie told me my feelings about this were completely different. The item of clothing now felt as if it were restricting my breathing, a change from just before I entered my home. The headache that was starting to form would not deter me from what had now become my only purpose: saving her.
Someone kidnapped her and I would drag whoever did this through the bowels of hell to get her back. This was a war and there wasn’t a chance that I would lose.
I pulled my phone out again and clicked a single button to redial the number that I practically had memorized due to how many times I had seen it in the last hour, but I got the same thing every time: Anais’s voicemail. I called both Kingston’s and Carter’s phones and got the same result. Where the fuck is everyone?
I cussed at myself for not working faster. The extra security measures that were supposed to be in place weren’t due to be installed until Monday. I’m failing her.

EXCERPT

Panic.
Silence.
Fear.
That was all I could hear and feel as I was carried somewhere. I struggled against my captor. My hands were restrained but that didn't mean I couldn't make his life difficult. I kicked my legs and moved my body as much as I could. Tears streamed down my cheeks, but they were absorbed by the cloth that covered my face.
I heard something click to my right and I held my breath, wondering if someone had cocked a gun. I briefly wondered how long it would take for me to feel the piercing pain that my father endured just before he ended up in a pool of his own blood. But nothing followed the sound. I shook my head and felt the cloth that was covering a portion of my face loosen. A few more shakes and I was able to get the fabric below my eyes and I squinted. The blinding light directly over me was disorienting, but for as bright as it was, it did little to light the entire room. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust, but I didn’t know where the hell I was.
Where is my father? Dread filled my heart as I thought back to the scene that unfolded in front of me. The memory of seeing his lifeless form just before I was kidnapped made my body turn cold. My lips trembled and my teeth chattered as fresh tears burst from my eyes. I shivered, but when I tried to bring my hand forward, I couldn't. My hands were tied with what felt like some type of plastic. I looked behind me and found that a zip tie held my hands together.
Fuck. My mind raced because I knew I had to get out of this. Nobody was coming to rescue me and I would have to do this myself. I took a few breaths, calming myself enough to stop the shivers. Now, Anais, what are you going to do? I knew there was no way to break out of this without hurting myself. How can I free myself? Is there a tool I can use to rip these cable ties open? I took another steadying breath and steeled myself before I examined my surroundings.
This room was foreign to me and had barely anything in it. There was a brown sofa, an outdated television sitting on a tiny stand, and I was sitting in a brown chair that had seen better days. I spotted a single closed door, but no windows or any signs that anyone actually lived or worked here.
Panic once again rose in my throat as the events of the last couple of hours flooded my brain. My heart thumped harder in my chest, and I knew that if I didn't get myself back under control, fear would take over again.
I couldn't allow that to happen because I had to get out of here. I took a deep breath and wondered if I could yell for help. Maybe my kidnappers were gone, and someone would hear me. It wasn't the best plan, but it was all I had. I took a deep breath and started screaming. I prayed that it wasn’t for naught and that my screams wouldn’t do anything but steal my voice.
“Help! Help! Help! Is someone there? Help me!”
“Would you shut up!” a deep voice from the corner of the room yelled.
I flinched and my mouth snapped shut. Fear returned tenfold. My heart sped up, beating a rapid drumbeat in my chest. I wasn’t alone.
