I feel like this book was designed to maximize impact on my feels. From the adorable cover, to the heartwarming premise, everything about Soldier’s Heart screamed my name. I was not disappointed. This book tackles some pretty heavy subject matter—stirring up tears and this whole whirlwind of emotions that didn’t die down until the (lovely and satisfying) epilogue. That said, it didn’t feel like a heavy book. The heavy pieces were balanced out with touches of light humor and…puppies. That’s right—if you are a dog lover? This book is for you.
This was my first book by Megan Green, and the second in a series. I think it worked well as a standalone, though I definitely feel like reading the first book would have enhanced the reading experience, especially for the first 10% of the book. That said, I still connected strongly to Isaiah and Emma. I loved them—particularly Emma with her matter-of-fact acceptance of the cards that life has dealt her, and her quirky, fun personality. She’s a strong heroine, incredibly likeable, and I found it impossible not to root for her.
Isaiah is a bit more damaged—he’s carrying more baggage than he knows what to do with and it’s thrown his life way off track. Circumstance brings him to Emma’s dog training business and there he finds peace and happiness, and makes the first steps towards healing. I loved Isaiah’s story, the journey that he took, and all the bumps along the way. While the love story was sweet and swoony, Isaiah’s personal story resonated with me even more. His journey was inspiring and heartwarming, and he’s a character who will stick with me for a long time.
I really enjoyed this entire book. I laughed a little. I cried…kind of a lot. There were some unexpected twists and turns, lots of sweet and a dash of sizzle—and heaps of adorable puppies that made what could have been a dark, heavy story feel light and hopeful.
