Once outside the bar, Ivo let go of her wrist. Stacey stepped away from him, eyes sparkling with wrath. She wrapped her arms around her body, closing up. The crowd on the inside had spilled out to the sidewalk, and if he didn't move quickly, she could disappear in the ill-lit surroundings. What a dump. The need to get her away from the seedy bar quadrupled.

He peeled his jacket off and held it out to her. “Come on, you're cold.” What the heck was she thinking, wearing a strapless top and a cock-tease mini-skirt in the heart of the Cape winter?

Stacey shrugged. “I'm good.”

In my opinion, you've never been worse. He stared at her, but she met his gaze head-on. “Where's your car?”

“Not here.” She looked as if she wouldn't answer him, but capitulated. “I took an Uber here.”

And was she going to take a taxi home? Or hitch a ride with her hook-up, spend the night with some dick, only to flounder home at some point tomorrow morning? Hung over, humped by some stranger, and then attempt her exam? No wonder she kept on flunking. He tried to keep a straight face, but in this environment, with her here, barely dressed, every control centre in his brain was having a breakdown. “I'll take you home.”

At this, she laughed. “Dr Linder, I don't think that's a good idea.”

“And why's that?”

She was spelling it out for him, all right. But he could be bloody stubborn and thick-headed too. “My type…you're so not ready for me.” She blinked at him, flirting with her eyelashes.

Every tendon in his body tightened, every muscle pulled towards his centre where his dick rose without invitation. Who mentioned ready?

He dropped his gaze, only to see chills sprouting on her arms and over her exposed chest; her fingers folded over her arms, turning white because of the cold.

He swallowed, unable to respond verbally without melting into her and holding her close, mouth against mouth, lips teasing. With one step, he closed the gap between them and dropped his jacket over her shoulders.

She shuddered at the gentle gesture. “I don't need you, Doctor. And you don't need me blazing your life into the ground.”

He was in her face now, their bodies sinfully close, his hands still on his jacket but resting on her shoulders. “I'm exactly what you need.”

She chuckled. “What about never having sex with me? Anywhere?”

“Stacey,” he sighed, resisting to urge to drop his forehead to hers. “I'm taking you home.”

“And then?”

His control slipped. The day was too long. The past three hours too intense. “Then, over the next few weeks, I'm going to take a bottle of paint stripper and brush you down. Layer by layer, until we find the real you and you stop pretending. So, cut it out.” The words came out in a way he should never talk to a patient. Being human sometimes interferes with the job.

“Thank you for Friday night. And for taking me away.” For a moment Stacey hovered, then she stepped up to him and pulled him close in a hug that shouted nothing but gratitude.

“You're welcome.” Ivo closed his arms around her, tightening her female frame to him, relishing the last moment of having her like this. She turned her face into his neck, her breathing softly caressing his skin, her nose leading a delicate trail on which a sigh followed. Right there where his pulse beat. Where her fingers had held him earlier. Held his heart.

The touch was so subtle, so gentle and pure, Ivo shut his eyes, feeling himself slip. His hands, which until that moment had rested on her back, inched lower, to the curve where back became butt. Stacey didn't stir but somehow came closer, her lips higher, her sweet scent more intense as he inhaled against her temple.

It only took a slight turn of his head, an easy slide down the most delicate of skin to capture her lips with his own. She didn't hesitate but kissed him back with equal unhurried intent, mooring against him, rising with slow breaths against his body in a mimic of water in a quiet harbour. He felt himself swell against her, his hands idling lower to where he could spread his fingers, kiss his palms over her softest curves and anchor her to him.

Her breathing hitched as her fingers wove into his hair, and he pressed her to him, knowing she'd feel him now, unable to stop himself. He should stop, but instead he kissed her deeper, with wonderment at how intimate the simple gesture seemed as she opened for him and their tongues slowly intertwined, raking together his deep sexual desire for her, making him moan into her mouth, which she echoed back.

Over the past few hours, their restraint had eroded bit by bit and made way for this moment of unavoidable collision. And he caved into it, into her warmth and heart. For deep down, he was starved.

When James let go of her hand he reached for their coffees. “Do you want to ruin this perfect espresso with sugar?”

“Yes, please.” Mila needed a bit of a rush which didn’t include James’s body next to hers, or his hands and fingers, which reminded her of that morning.

James spooned some sugar into her black espresso and stirred it. “Here you go. Butter bomb?” he asked as he shifted the plate with pastries closer to her.

“If I have to.” She licked her lips, her mouth watering just looking at the picture-perfect pastries. Her mind could list a hundred reasons why she shouldn’t, health-conscious as she’d been forced to be. But this… she wasn’t going to resist.

He smiled at her. “You have to. You’re in Paris.”

Caving in, Mila took a bite with a soft moan. “They’re sinful.”

A soft smile tugged at his lips as he gazed at her, but he said nothing as he ate his own. When he tossed his coffee back and put the cup down, he looked at her, serious now. “What do you want for your life, Mila?”

She blinked. As if anybody had ever cared. “I want to see the world, and not only from its rugby stadiums.”

“There’s much more to it, I agree.”

“I want to find my niche in art. I’ve been floundering lately. I need some visual… inspiration, to find my way back to what I love doing.”

“And this is why you are in Paris?”

“The primary reason.”

He hitched his eyebrows. “I see.” A smile sparkled in his eyes. “You want to elaborate on the secondary… and tertiary reasons?”

Heat shot to her cheeks. How did he know? Stacey’s freaking to-do list with losing her virginity the first thing on said list. “Already accomplished.”

He leaned into her, the warmth of his body enveloping hers, making her clench her legs together, overly aware of their thighs that had been rubbing against each other for the past half hour. His lips were at her ear, grazing softly from the top to the soft bud of her earlobe. “I’m glad I could be of service.”

The sensation of his intimate whisper shot to her core, making her innards pool. “Don’t go there,” she murmured. She wanted to sink and hide under the table. Did he think that she’d used him? Had she? The thought was too much, overridden by that very familiar tingling inside her lower belly. I've always been drawn to the magical escape of books and the journeys they take us on without leaving the comfort of home. I’ve been fortunate to have traveled to France, and this book was inspired by a visit to Paris some years ago. We were walking in some narrow alley in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, when I noticed a door with a single plaque with Club Privé written on it. My imagination got going, and at some point, things got pretty wild. I’ve wanted to write for a long time, but life had plans of its own. I’m grateful to finally have time to write, and love writing contemporary and erotic romance in far-flung settings. Taking readers on a journey of their own with my books is part of the plot.
