Review - Best Worst Mistake by Lia Riley

Title: Best Worst Mistake
WSeries: Brightwater #3
Author: Lia Riley
Release Date: October 20, 2015

Sometimes the worst mistakes turn out to be the best…

Smoke jumper Wilder Kane once reveled in the rush from putting out dangerous wildfires. But after a tragic accident, he’s cut himself off from the world, refusing to leave his isolated cabin. When a headstrong beauty bursts in, Wilder finds himself craving the fire she ignites in him, but letting anyone near his darkness would be a mistake.

After her Hollywood life went up in smoke, Quinn Higsby decided to leave Tinseltown behind and return to Brightwater to care for her ailing father. She spends her days in a small bookstore, until her peaceful existence is up-ended by a fascinating but damaged man. Quinn is determined not to be scared off by Wilder, not once she’s experienced the heat of his passions.

But when an arsonist targets the community and Wilder is accused, he must confront the ghosts of his past. Will his desire for Quinn burn him up or will he be able to tame the wildness inside and rekindle a hope for their future?

Oh, Wilder Kane gave me a certain kind of wild—the kind that comes from a well-written, engaging, sexy and oh, so charming book. Starring a gruff, grumpy, craggy near-hermit, and a sassy, sparky, fun bookworm. *Sigh*

When Wilder Kane’s smoke jumping career ends in tragedy, he ends up back in the one place he never wanted to return…Brightwater, California. He refuses to be anything other than the quiet, taciturn, black sheep of the Kane family though, so he’s not exactly making friends galore in his out-of-the-way cabin.

When circumstance brings ex-Hollywood gofer, and current local bookseller, Quinn Higsby to Wilder’s doorstep, she is determined to find the heart of gold she is sure is hidden underneath his stubborn, brusque exterior. Until an arsonist starts to target the town and both Wilder and Quinn are drawn into the mystery…

Can Quinn break through to Wilder, or will their spark fizzle before it catches ablaze?

I’ve really enjoyed this series from Lia Riley, and this one is my absolute favorite. It gave me ALL THE FEELS, and I found myself close to tears and turned on…kinda at the same time, if I am honest. It’s just THAT good—engaging in a way that makes putting it down an impossibility, and the prospect of reaching the end a little disappointing, because, damn it, you want to stay with this couple forever.

Wilder…I don’t even know where to start with this guy. He’s a grump, a little mean almost, but not really. Because you know—you just know—that beneath the exterior is a truly good man, who has been a little beaten down by life, and what/who he believes he is…even though he’s not. Sorry for that roundabout sentence, but I am confident that if—WHEN—you read this fabulous book, you’ll understand. Wilder is sexy-as-hell despite (because of?) his flaws, and he is perfectly imperfect, a broken and scarred man that made me all swoony inside.

And Quinn—I completely loved her. She was fun and determined, a good person who was working my dream job—a bookstore in a picturesque town. I loved how she pushed at Wilder, knowing what we all knew too, that there was good underneath, and I adored that she saw in him what sometimes even his family did not. She fit into this story, this series and this town perfectly.

The mystery that makes up Best Worst Mistake was interesting, and although I thought I had it figured out early, I did not, which was a very pleasant surprise. I’m absolutely in love with this small-town series and I can’t wait for more—and there has to be more…

A childhood family tragedy resulted in Wilder Kane putting as much distance between himself and his family as possible. Now a surly, sexy, strong smoke jumper in Montana, it is cruel irony when a horrific parachute accident ends with him back home and under the care of the family he spent so long pushing away. Broken in every way imaginable, Wilder holes up inside his sterile, secluded home—no more willing to engage now than he ever was before. Wilder remains withdrawn and reclusive until the day Quinn Higsby comes barreling into his life.

Quinn has her own reasons for keeping herself on the sidelines of society—a failed career in Hollywood and an ailing father have left her with her own fair share of baggage. She’s intrigued by Wilder, though; drawn to him in a way she can’t quite explain. He’s not friendly, or warm, or particularly handsome, but there’s a kindness underneath the stony surface into which she’s determined to chisel.

Wilder and Quinn are opposites—she’s the light to his dark—but their chemistry is undeniable, and they balance each other out perfectly. He’s surly and prickly and unapproachable, but Quinn is strong and feisty and not afraid of Wilder’s sharp edges. She soothes them down, draws him out, and restores his humanity in a way he never even thought possible. It’s a lovely thing watching these two learn how to let each other in.

I don’t know if it’s just my inexplicable attraction to crabby, wounded heroes, but the heat in this book was kicked up several notches as well. Like, DAMN. Wilder and Quinn steamed up my Kindle—their mixture of tenderness, unexplored intimacy, and raw need was enough for me to issue a panty-soaker warning on this one. They’re intense, sexy, and explosive.

Oh. My. Goodness.

For me this is—hands down—the best of the Brightwater series yet. I am a sucker for a good “Beauty and the Beast” story and this one satisfied on all levels. Steamy, tender, laugh-out-loud funny, and full of the quirky Brightwater secondary characters I’ve come to love; there’s a little bit of fairy tale mixed with a dash of mystery and the end result is pure swoony pleasure.

After reading about the two other Kane brothers, I knew Lia would pull out all the stops with Wilder and I was absolutely right! This story is a classic fairy tale which could not be more fitting for this dynamic duo.

Wilder is a fierce, alpha male that likes his privacy, while Quinn is a lovable, outgoing book enthusiast. Ring any bells? This Beauty and The Beast couple didn't instantly hit it off but once they did, there was no stopping them!

Their story was full of fireworks, sass and a whole lot of taming the beast...who really wasn't that beastly at all. I can't wait for the next addition in the Brightwater series!

Review - Right Wrong Guy by Lia Riley

Title: Right Wrong Guy
Series: Brightwater #2
Author: Lia Riley
Release Date: August 4, 2015

Sometimes two wrongs can make a right...

Bad boy wrangler, Archer Kane, lives fast and loose. Words like responsibility and commitment send him running in the opposite direction. Until a wild Vegas weekend puts him on a collision course with Eden Bankcroft-Kew, a New York heiress running away from her blackmailing fiancé…the morning of her wedding.

Eden has never understood the big attraction to cowboys. Give her a guy in a tailored suit any day of the week. But now all she can think about is Mr. Rugged Handsome, six-feet of sinfully sexy country charm with a pair of green eyes that keeps her tossing and turning all night long.

Archer might be the wrong guy for a woman like her, but she's not right in thinking he'll walk away without fighting for her heart. And maybe, just maybe, two wrongs can make a right.

Like Cupid’s arrow through the heart, I’ve fallen for an archer. Well, a cowboy by the name of Archer. Archer Kane, manwhore, bad boy and big ol’ softie, to be exact. Sigh. These Kane men, they’re killing me with swooniness.

Heiress Eden Bankcroft-Kew has never really understood the appeal of cowboys…until she meets one fine example the morning of her aborted Vegas wedding. She needs an escape, and the handsome, friendly stranger is headed in the right direction. Brightwater, California.

Archer Kane has never been the responsible type. Women, wrangling and wild nights, that’s been the sum total of his twenty-seven years. But there’s something different about Edie, and suddenly the only woman Archer wants to wrangle is the sweet, sexy redhead in his passenger seat.

He’s not the right guy for Edie, and this is definitely the wrong time for them…right?

Swoon! This book was a load of fun; so easy, so charming, so sexy and so right. I loved this most everything about this book, especially the gentle, playful way it flowed through the story, making even the craziest moments seem…kinda adorable. Much like Archer Kane.

That man, I swear. I really enjoyed Last First Kiss, the first book in the delightful small town series, and Archer’s big brother, Sawyer was delish. But, um, Archer blew him out of the water in the ‘be still my beating heart’ stakes. Good grief. Sure, getting a girl in bed might have been is M.O., but the man had all the right moves and all the right words, and he made a believer out of me. Gah, why don’t men like this exist in real life?

Edie, so lucky… She can cook, she’s got the punniest café name of all time (take that, The Daily Grind), and she’s being pursued by a six foot tall man in a cowboy hat. I want that. Can I have that, pretty please? I felt for her situation, but couldn’t help but face-palm a little at her reasons for marrying the bastard fiancé that she (rightfully) ditched on D-Day. Or, wait, that should be W-Day. Wedding Day. But hey, we all make mistakes, right?

This was a pretty simple story. Boy meets girl. Boy falls for girl. Girl finds out that boy has slept with every single woman in a 100 mile radius (more or less), but still, it had a lot of appeal. Grandma Kane, for example. That crotchety old cow is quite amusing. Sawyer and Annie, there was just enough of them to make it good. Throw in a little small town intrigue and a solid foundation for the next book in this series, and you’ve got a winner.

I love Lia Riley’s genial, easy-going style of writing, and Right Wrong Guy was another book that won me over from the start and made me fall in love. Surprisingly, not just with Archer, but with Brightwater in general.

I have this special place in my heart for reformed bad boys. Watching a callous womanizer have his life turned upside down by love is one of the headiest romantic journeys an author can take me on. I would argue that there are few things sexier than the soft, insecure underbelly of the cocky, overconfident ladies’ man. Archer Kane is no exception – Lord Almighty, this man set my heart to racing.

Archer Kane has a well-deserved reputation. He’s spent his life avoiding commitment, out for nothing more than a good time. Eden Bankcroft-Kew has spent her life stiffly in the confines of the society into which she was born. When Archer meets Edie, she’s just left her awful, miserable fiancée on the day of their wedding and she’s looking for a fresh start. Something about Edie makes Archer want a fresh start too.

This couple is adorable. Edie makes Archer want to be a better man, and watching that happen is – well, like I said, it’s one of my favorite book storylines. Edie has some of her own issues to sort through and while Archer may have decided to turn in his manwhore card, Edie isn’t such a sure thing. Archer kicks things into overdrive to win her over and the results are adorable, funny, sweet and swoony.

This is a quick, simple, swoony read. My only complaint (and it is minor) is that the connection between Archer and Edie felt a little like instalove. I would maybe have liked a little more push/pull and smart, witty banter. Like I said – minor, because the fact remains that this is the perfect kind of book to sweep you off your feet for the time your nose is stuck in it.

If you read Last First Kiss, you’ll recognize some familiar faces and take comfort in the fact that Grandma Kane is just as hilarious and crotchety as ever. I am loving this series – Brightwater is peaceful and quirky, and apparently, chock full of sexy cowboys. I’ll definitely be back for more!

It's no secret that I love everything Lia Riley writes. She is a master at creating stories which paint a picture that could easily rival reality. This book was no different! There was compassion, anger, love, humor and good ol’ Grandma Kane. She seriously needs a book for herself!

While this book lack a bit of a zing factor regarding plot twists, there was so much love and determination that it plainly just didn't matter. I had a feeling how the book was going to play out and I was so glad when it did! I can't wait to dive into the last Kane brother's story.

Review - Last First Kiss by Lia Riley

Title: Last First Kiss
Series: Brightwater #1
Author: Lia Riley
Release Date: June 23, 2015

A kiss is just the beginning…

Pinterest Perfect. Or so Annie Carson's life appears on her popular blog. Reality is ... messier. Especially when it lands her back in one-cow town Brightwater, California, and back in the path of the gorgeous six-foot-four reason she left. Sawyer Kane may fill out those Wranglers, but she won't be distracted from her task. Annie just needs the summer to spruce up and sell her family's farm so she and her young son can start a new life in the big city. Simple, easy, perfect.

Sawyer has always regretted letting the first girl he loved slip away. He won't make the same mistake twice, but can he convince beautiful, wary Annie to trust her heart again when she's been given every reason not to? And as a single kiss turns to so much more, can Annie give up her idea of perfect for a forever that's blissfully real?

I’m headed to Brightwater, and I may not come back. If you’re looking for me, I’ve probably been arrested by the sexy cowboy/sheriff and I have no regrets. Because cowboy + sheriff + handcuffs...

Tell my kids I love them.

Annie Carson’s goal when she heads back home to Brightwater is to get the family farm ready for sale. Then, take the money and start her new life and not look back.

Sawyer Kane’s goal when he finds out that Annie is back in town is to find a way to make her stay. Years have passed since her heart and trust were broken, but Sawyer’s not going to let that happen again.

Convincing her to stay is no simple task. But when the end result may be better than the perfect future she has in mind, does Annie have it in her to fall?

SAWYER KANE. Aside from having one of the sexiest names in the history of, like, EVER, he’s a Southern charmer, a guy that knows what he wants, and can totally bring it when he needs to use his *ahem* masculine wiles to show Annie what could be... Oh my, anyone else getting hot?

I loved this story. It was a simple, second chance romance, with a dash of forbidden love and a whole lot of witty, playful banter. It’s easy to relate to Annie, who is living a series of capture-able moments for her blog, and who is finding real life to be much harder than she expected. Been there. She’s not perfect – as a mother, as a daughter, physically or mentally. Been there, too. Scratch that...am there.

And yet, for all her imperfectness, Annie is funny and smart, she’s determined to make the best decisions, even if she has to make the wrong ones first to recognize the right ones, and she’s attracted the attention of the law...the very sexy law, mind you. (Haven’t been there, but I’d like to be!)

I’m excited for this new series from Lia Riley. It’s different from her amazing Off The Map series (which remains one of my all-time favorites), but it’s still chock-full of that something that she brings to her books. The *something* that keeps me coming back for more, and probably always will. At the very least, I’ll be back for Archer’s story. Perhaps I can read it from my jail cell in Brightwater?
~ Review by Beth

Well, shit. It looks like I just added another book boyfriend to my (rather extensive) collection. Sawyer Kane is positively swoonworthy. Rugged and hot and a lethally sexy combination of cowboy and cop. It just so happens that my boyfriend collection was missing a cowboy/cop and now I am complete. Welcome to the family, Sawyer!

This is an adorable, sweet, second chance romance. Sawyer Kane and Annabelle (Annie) Carson didn’t exactly date in high school, but they woulda/shoulda/coulda. It was a heartbreaking misunderstanding that tore them apart.

Ten years later, Annie is recently divorced and has moved back to her hometown with her five year old son. Sawyer is still there doing his sexy cowboy/cop thing and being completely awesome in general. It doesn’t take long for the two to reconnect and once the swooning begins, it doesn’t let up for pretty much the entire rest of the book.

I loved Annie, and identified with her insecurities. I admired her bravery and pluck, even when she wasn’t sure of herself. I loved how Sawyer patiently dealt with Annie’s insecurities and stayed the course for her. I loved the way he stepped outside of his comfort zone and opened his heart to Annie’s son, Atticus. I loved that he’s a dog person. I loved the tender way he handled Annie, and that he didn’t play games and was always honest and up front. Together these two are just incredibly cute – playful, loving and sexy.

This book was a simple, quick read. Simply sweet, simply swoony, and simply wonderful.
