Review - The Lie by Karina Halle

Title: The Lie
Author: Karina Halle
Release Date: February 15, 2016

Their love led to a lie
Their truth led to the end

Brigs McGregor is crawling out from the ashes. After losing his wife and son in a car accident and his job from his subsequent downward spiral, he's finally moving forward, getting a prestigious teaching position at the University of London and a new life in the city. Slowly, but surely, he's pushing past the guilt and putting his tragic past behind him.

Until he sees her.

Natasha Trudeau once loved a man so much she thought she'd die without him. But their love was wrong, doomed from the start, and when their world crashed around them, Natasha was nearly buried in the rubble. It took years of moving on to forget him, and now that she's in London, she's ready to start again.

Until she sees him.

Because some loves are too dangerous to ever indulge.
And some loves are far too powerful to ignore.
Their love just might be the life and the death of them.

"The truth doesn't just hurt, it destroys."

I wish I could come up with some profound review to give you on why The Lie will be one of your favorite reads of 2016 but the words won't come. I am still in such awe that nothing I can describe the kaleidoscope of emotions I felt while reading this outstanding book. I'm fairly new to Karina Halle but I can tell you that this book made me want to read them all.

If you have read The Play and Winter Wishes, you'll know a little backstory to Brigs, our main character with a horribly haunted past. Losing his wife and only child in a car accident, one he thinks he caused four years prior, left him damaged and with self-loathing. Now, he is on the road of healing. Still grieving, but with the help from family and a therapist, he is starting to live his life again. Just when things are looking up, enter Natasha!

To say that I shed a few tears would be an understatement. There was no choice in the matter. Karina made you fall in love with these characters, their story and their despair. I felt their every emotion as if it was my own.

Not only did I cry but I laughed as well. There were funny moments, sexy moments, sarcastic moments. There were nerdy moments, adorable moments and heart-shattering moments. It was the perfect second chance story, beautifully delivered by a sexy school teacher and the one who got—or rather he pushed—away.

Holy cats. This book doesn’t pull any punches. 5% in and my heart was bleeding all over the place. Ouch. OUCH. I can’t even…

Brigs McGregor is slowly putting the pieces of his life back together after losing his wife and son in a tragic car accident. His life was obliterated. His entire sense of himself was shattered and it is only just now, four years later, that he’s pulling himself out of the blackness. He has a new job. A new, healthier perspective on life. And while his outlook on the future may not be exactly hopeful, it’s no longer completely bleak either.

When Brigs sees Natasha Trudeau, like a ghost straight out of his past, everything he ever felt—good or bad—comes rushing back to him. He’s knocked on his ass by feelings he thought he’d never feel again, for a person he thought was gone from his life forever. However, there’s a mountain of baggage between the two of them, and being together may come at a great cost. They say you don’t get to choose who you fall in love with, but you choose who you fight for—and sometimes that makes all the difference.

Good God, this book was so raw; so deeply emotional and intense and sometimes painful to read. My heart hurt for Brigs and Natasha—and I felt stuck with them, wading through the thick, choking grief, guilt and self-loathing. As they reconnect and make steps—together and separately—towards healing and forgiveness and acceptance of the love they have between them, it’s lovely and beautiful and incredibly bittersweet.

I sometimes had trouble enjoying their relationship because there was so much sadness between them. I felt like sometimes the highs weren’t high enough to balance out the lows. I was rooting for them, but I was also sucked under by them. And truly, their pasts were enough for them to muddle through and sort out—the troubles they had to navigate beyond that sometimes felt like overkill. Too much. I needed more sweetness and maybe a smidge less drama.

That said, this was a gorgeous story about soulmates. Two beautiful people who survived unspeakable grief and found redemption in each other. I loved them. I loved their ending. But, honestly, what I loved most of all was how Brigs’ relationship with his family was portrayed. I loved Lachlan (still, and maybe even more now) and the brotherly role he took on. The scenes with Brigs and Lachlan together were some of the sweetest for me. And the entire McGregor family was like a soft, warm bear hug in the middle of all this sticky drama.

There are also little, unexpected moments of humor that were a much appreciated break from the rawness of this story. It added depth, and adorableness and made the reading experience that much richer.

This wasn’t my favorite of the series, which is tough to say because it was kind of brilliant, and emotional, and could not have been an easy book to write. I have a profound appreciation for that. I think that, for me, it just skimped on the swoon and sometimes the obstacles that Brigs and Natasha had to overcome overshadowed how good they were together. Don’t get me wrong, it was still a really, really good book. A wonderful, heartbreaking, haunting, and redemptive addition to this series of books that just seems to continue to grow in depth and emotional punches. Definitely don’t skip it, just be prepared for tissues and the unending need to wrap Brigs and Natasha in giant, comforting bear hugs.

Review - The Play by Karina Halle

Title: The Play
Author: Karina Halle
Release Date: November 3, 2015

A troubled Scottish rugby player who doesn't play by the rules.
A vivacious man-eater who's given up on love.
When it comes to Lachlan and Kayla, opposites don't just attract - they explode.

Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her thirties and saw her best friends Stephanie and Nicola settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla to be the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the backburner.

That is until she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram’s cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. Lachlan is her sexual fantasy come to life – tall, tatted, and built like a Mack truck. With a steely gaze and successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, he’s the kind of man that makes her want to throw her vow right out the window. But Lachlan’s quiet and intense demeanor makes him a hard man to get to know, let alone get close to.

It isn’t until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes there is so much more to this brooding macho man than what meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can’t stay in America forever. Now, Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again.

Sometimes love is a game that just needs to be played.

I have no idea how to express what this book did to my heart. It started with a bang of laughter—a literal laugh-out-loud moment that had me all excited for this funny book. And it was a book with many lighthearted, laugh-out-loud moments, but it wasn't just a funny book. It was so, so much more than that.

Look, I'm not usually a crier. I mean, sometimes a tear will escape or I'll have a little sniffle, but it takes a LOT to make me ugly cry. A lot. I don't like feeling like my emotions are being manipulated and so I sort-of turn off when I feel like I'm being led down an emotionally treacherous path. But, God damn, Karina Halle snuck one in on me. And I don't want to scare you off this book because while some of that crying was because my heart was fucking breaking all over the place, some of it was because of the breathtaking beauty of this love story, and how amazingly, beautifully told it was. I would read words and gasp and think "Holy shit—this feels like falling in love. Exactly like it." And then my eyes would leak some more.

So? Where do I begin? How do I even try to capture how big this story was? To say it is a Beauty and the Beast story (which I love) seems to be trying to put it in a box into which it doesn't wholly belong. Lachlan is a beast—he's built like a sequoia tree, tall and broad, bearded and tatted (delicious, and irresistible). He's all male, all heart, and chock full of demons. He's so complex and deeply layered—his demons at constant war with his big, beautiful heart. It was impossible not to love him, but also impossible not to kind of hate him a little bit too. I hurt for him. I ached for him. I wanted to punch him in the nuts and shake some sense into him, and I wanted to fold him in my arms and soothe the pain away—all in equal measures. He was amazing. I fell so completely in love with him; his compassion, his brokenness, his unflinching humanness.

Kayla has been known for being all lighthearted and fun times. Nobody's really scratched beneath the surface with her before. She is deathly afraid of love, of opening her heart to someone and all the consequences that come with that. But she was completely powerless against Lachlan's charms (such as they were). She fell so completely in love with him, like it wasn't even a choice. Like his being in her world was the only way her world was ever going to exist, and her getting on board with her love for him was the only possible outcome. She soothed Lachlan's inner beast and she was strong when he was weak. I love a strong heroine. I love someone I can rally behind—who doesn't create conflict and doesn't lose all sense of herself when the conflict rears its ugly head. Kayla was perfect—her unapologetic humanness and Lachlan's humanness call to each other and in the end, they find their home in each other.

This book is intensely emotional in a way I was not expecting. It is, by turns, breathtakingly beautiful, scorching hot (and I'm not using the term scorching lightly here; the sexiness of this book probably deserves its own paragraph, maybe even its own review), painful, heartbreaking, redemptive and sweet. It's....stunning in its honesty, its intensity, and its beauty. I loved every minute.

Review - Racing the Sun by Karina Halle

Title: Racing the Sun
Author: Karina Halle
Release Date: July 28, 2015

From the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of Where Sea Meets Sky comes a new adult novel about a young woman who becomes a nanny in Capri and falls for her charges’ bad-boy brother.

When I’m traveling, I feel like the secret to my life, to myself, to really becoming, is one step ahead. It’s in the next destination, the next town I get lost in, the next stranger I talk to. It’s always next but never here . . .

After six months of backpacking and soul-searching across the world, Amber MacLean is flat broke. There are worse places for a twentysomething to be stuck than the Amalfi Coast, but the only way she can earn enough money for a plane ticket home to California is to teach English to two of the brattiest children she has ever met.

It doesn’t help that the children are under the care of their brooding older brother, ex-motorcycle racer Desiderio Larosa. Darkly handsome and oh-so-mysterious, the young master of the crumbling villa tests Amber’s patience and will at every turn—not to mention her hormones.

When her position turns into a full-time nanny gig, Amber grows dangerously closer to the enigmatic recluse. But can she give up the certainty of home for someone whose closely guarded heart feels a world apart from her own?

Oh, this book! My heart! I am in love with this couple.

"My heart is swooning a little, like it’s about to faint."

That is how I felt through the entire book. When I would put this book down at night, I couldn't stop thinking about them, so I would pick it back up! This Italian Stallion and adorably tough "lioness" haired American are so perfect.

In the beginning Derio is broody, mysterious and standoffish. Amber (and I) are "not sure whether to be scared or turned on. Or both." The build-up to opening Derio up and falling for him is like a rich Italian meal. With beautiful descriptive writing, I want to book a trip to Capri! As long as I can ogle at Derio in his perfect red Speedo, that is. Yeah, Karina Halle made a man in a Speedo swimsuit look hot. He is a "bronzed, dark-eyed, Italian sex machine..." *melts*

Amber is just as lovable. She has been traveling for months now, over many countries, and because nothing is cheap, is in need of money. She starts working for Derio as an English tutor for his twin seven year old siblings. To see Amber grow and become so loving was powerful. I would find myself holding my breath every time I THOUGHT she and Derio would finally fall for each other. When they did...WOW, such passionate love scenes!

This story, a sort of Beauty and the Beast love, would not be complete without some angsty drama. But thankfully, it is not for long. I loved this book. There is nothing Ms. Halle could have done to make it better!
~ Review by Krissy

Out of money and out of luck, American tourist Amber MacLean must come up with a way to fund her airfare from Italy back to the States. It is an act of desperation when she answers the ad seeking an English tutor for young Italian twins. It is an act of fate that she lands the job.

As the new tutor for the Larosa twins, Amber moves into their villa on the island of Capri. The setting of this book has a very gothic feel to it. Even the name of the villa – “The House of Sad Lemons” – affords the book a sort of eerie, spooky feeling. You’re immediately given the idea that something is not quite right. The Larosa family has suffered a series of tragedies and their grief has led to bad behavior and reclusiveness. The twins are under the care of their older brother, Desiderio (Derio) – who is himself suffering from a lack of social graces. Amber walks into a family full of lives, interrupted.

Amber herself is running from her life back home. Her parents are overbearing and insufferable. Against all odds, the Larosa family finds their way into her heart and she makes it her mission to breathe life back into the sorely neglected house, and each broken person inside of it.

Ms. Halle handled these complicated relationships with great care. This book was by turns laugh out loud funny, heartbreaking, and chock full of those rollercoaster-ride swoony love feelings (that is the technical description). It doesn’t take long for Amber to fall in love with both the misunderstood, grieving twins and their handsome, surly, reclusive brother. Amber draws Derio out of his shell and once connected, they heal each other. The relationship they form is passionate, tender, and intense.

Amber, for all her insecurities and misgivings is full of such pluck, determination and good humor, that it’s impossible not to like her. Derio is the ultimate sexy, brooding bad boy. An air of mystery surrounds him until Amber cuts through right to his soft underbelly and then we discover that he is deeply romantic in that way you always imagined an Italian lover would be. He says all the right things with just the right intensity - you wonder how Amber possibly keeps her clothes on for as many hours in the day that she does.

Everything about this book was gorgeous – the setting, the broken but fiercely loyal family, the hesitant friendships that blossom into richly nuanced relationships. This story is so robust, I struggle to get my arms around it – how to describe the beautiful, complicated layers and still convey how lighthearted and sometimes hysterical this book was. The fire and explosive passion between Derio and Amber stuck with me long after I turned the last page.

Blog Tour - Where Sea Meets Sky by Karina Halle

Title: Where Sea Meets Sky
Author: Karina Halle
 Publisher: Atria Books
Release Date: March 31, 2015

A new adult novel that perfectly captures the existential angst of your early twenties with raw wit, fresh insight, and true feeling from a critically adored USA TODAY bestselling author.

Joshua Miles has spent his early twenties spinning his wheels. Working dead-end jobs and living at home has left him exhausted and uninspired, with little energy to pursue his passion for graphic art. Until he meets Gemma Henare, a vivacious out-of-towner from New Zealand. What begins as a one-night stand soon becomes a turning point for Josh. He can’t get Gemma out of his head, even after she has left for home, and finds himself throwing caution to the wind for the first time in his life.

It’s not long before Josh is headed to New Zealand with only a backpack, some cash, and Gemma’s name to go on. But when he finally tracks her down, he finds his adventure is only just beginning. Equally infatuated, Gemma leads him on a whirlwind tour across the beautiful country, opening Josh up to life, lust, love, and all the messy heartache in between. Because, when love drags you somewhere, it might never let go—even when you know you have to say goodbye.

Oh baby! This book starts out HOT right from the get go! We have the meet cute at a Halloween party, the instant chemistry and then BAM! Orgasms for everyone! I was squirming in my seat! Where Sea Meets Sky is Karina Halle's newest New Adult offering and if you're a fan of the genre get ready to One-Click this one stat!

Josh and Gemma have an epic one night stand she leaves to return to her home in New Zealand the next day. Neither can forget the other. So Josh travels to New Zealand, not to track Gemma down, but for the experience. Well traveled Gemma inspired him to get out in the world. Of course they meet again, or this wouldn't be a romance. Only Josh wasn't planning on being the third wheel when he finds out Gemma is seeing someone else.

Set in Canada and New Zealand, this book is totally amazing. Karina's lush descriptions of the landscape really transport the reader into each and every scene. And if I had the funds and was single, I'd be making a trip there myself. It sounds stunning!

There is a bit of a love triangle element in this one, which I loved! It really ramped up the angst factor and it totally gave me the feels! This is such an amazingly written book. If you've read Love in English or Love in Spanish, you're going to love this because we get little snippets of Vera and Mateo. FYI, Josh is Vera's brother. But no, you don't need to read those two books before this one, Where Sea Meets Sky is totally a standalone. No cliffhanger.

He’s thirty-eight. I’m twenty-three.

He speaks Spanish. I speak English.

He lives in Spain. I live in Canada.

He dresses in thousand-dollar suits. I’m covered in tattoos.

He’s married and has a five-year old daughter.

I’m single and can’t commit to anyone or anything.

Until now. Because when they say you can’t choose who you fall in love with, boy ain’t that the f*#king truth.

***

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she’d spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.

Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she’s usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something…more.

Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.

Something that can never, ever be.

Or so she thinks.

Claudia shrugged and pulled down at her yellow tee. “Not my problem. Eduardo is nice but Ricardo is really nice.”
“How did it happen?” I asked, kinda wanting the sordid details.
She was coy. “The way it usually happens.”
“Did you make the first move?”
Another shrug. “Why not?”
I swear, a shrug and a “why not?” were the Spaniards’ go-to answer for everything.
“Well, then I guess it seems safe—and a little boring now—to tell you that I have a crush on someone.”
Her brows quirked up. “Other than Mateo?”
“What?”
“You are sleeping with Mateo, no?”
“WHAT?!”
“No?”
“No!” I exclaimed, appalled. “Why does everyone keep thinking that?”
“Because you are always together,” she said simply. She took a sip of wine. “The attraction is very obvious. So, I figured you must be sleeping together.”
“He’s married!”
“Yes, but you are not.”
I shook my head adamantly. “It’s wrong. I don’t want to be the other woman. I’ve seen my dad go for the other woman, and I can’t put Mateo’s daughter through that,” I said. “Or his wife,” I quickly added.
“That doesn’t mean that you can’t have feelings for anyone else.”
“Yes, it does mean that.”
“Maybe you are meant to be together.”
“We’re not! There isn’t even a together. We’re just friends. I haven’t done anything about it, and so far my feelings are totally one-sided.”
Claudia got up off the couch and brought a pack of cigarettes out of her front jean pocket. “If you think it is on the one side, you have not seen the way he looks at you.”
She walked over to her small patio table and pulled out a chair. I got up and stormed after her, my nerves dancing excitedly.
“What do you mean, the way he looks at me?” I asked, lowering my voice in case there were people around listening. I felt like bouncing off the walls.
She slid the ashtray toward her as I sat down. “You do not see it. But I do. I think everyone does. He looks at you like…like you’re his favorite food.”
“Favorite food?”
She lit her cigarette. “Yes. You’re like his favorite food in the whole world. He wants to have you, eat you, devour you. He thinks about you all the time, craves you. But he cannot have you for one reason or another. Perhaps you upset his stomach. Maybe he is on a diet, yes? All he wants is a taste, but he cannot even have that. That is how he looks at you.”
I sat there, stunned, as some of her smoke blew in my face. That’s how Mateo looked at me? Like he wanted to eat me? I was pretty sure that’s how I looked at him. Just last night I was contemplating nibbling on his earlobes.
“And yes,” she said, leaning closer to me, a small smile on her lips, “that is also how you look at him.” Great, a mind reader. “But you are more subtle about it. You try not to let everyone know. But, we know.”
“There is nothing to know,” I reminded her, poking the table with my finger for emphasis. “We are not sleeping together. He is married. I have a crush. That is it. The end of the story.”
“A crush?” she questioned. “Vera, I think you’re in love with him.”
No fucking way. Not love. That did not happen with me, not ever and not now.
“You can’t fall in love in a week,” I told her heatedly.
“You can fall in love in a second,” she said with a snap of her fingers. “The heart has no regard for time.”
With that sobering thought, Claudia told me about her ex-boyfriend and how they fell in love at first sight then took the conversation back to Ricardo and their exploits. I envied her so badly right then and there. She could fawn over Ricardo, kiss him, fuck him, and no one would ever bat an eye. It was okay for them to be together. It wasn’t forbidden.
I gulped the rest of the wine and left her apartment, heading back to reception to meet Cristina for my next one-on-one, my mind and heart and hormones all over the place. Lo and behold, Mateo was walking up the path toward me.
He was on the phone, smiling.
His shirt was off and slung over his shoulder, exposing his bare chest, abs, and arms.
Holy fuck.
For a moment, I was sure that time had stopped. Or maybe ever single nerve, cell, vein, bone, muscle in my body just slowed as I took him all in.
From his thick-veined forearms to his sculpted shoulders and broad chest peppered with neatly-trimmed chest hair, to his six-pack abs, he had, by far, the best body I’d ever seen on a man. He kept himself in fine-ass shape, looking more like a young athlete than anything else. He and David Beckham had more in common than I thought, although David’s skin tone wasn’t as mesmerizing. Mateo’s color was amazing, just beautiful, this dark, golden bronze that covered him everywhere. I wanted so badly to just touch him, to lick the sheen of sweat off his skin. I bet he tasted like victory.
And to think this was the man that Claudia said wanted to taste me.
I really, really wanted to believe her.
Meanwhile, I was just standing there like I was melting into a puddle of myself. I clamped my mouth shut as he walked past and I heard him say into the phone, “No, mi tesorito, it was easy, I didn’t injure myself.” He was beaming, talking about the game, to his wife. To his tesorito. And he called their relationship complicated? This was complicated.
He winked at me in acknowledgement, his smile becoming broader. I tried to smile back but it wouldn’t come. I just stared at him, feeling stupid, foolish, and strangely rejected. In a perfect world I may have been his favorite food, but it still wasn’t what he got served every day. I turned around and walked down the hill, my heart feeling like a pincushion.
“Vera!” I heard him call out from behind. I stopped and nervously glanced over my shoulder. He was holding the phone’s receiver to his chest, grinning at me. “I need to ask you your question.”
“What?” I asked, hoping it was quick.
“Who is your favorite Spaniard here?”
Seriously?
And yet I couldn’t lie to him.
“You,” I said, more to myself than to him. Then I turned around and walked away as quickly as I could.
