Review - Shifting Gears by Riley Hart

Title: Shifting Gears
Series: Crossroads #2
Author: Riley Hart
Release Date: February 10, 2016

Rod Nelson is used to being someone’s good time, and that’s fine with him. Spending his days at his adult toy store, Rods-N-Ends, he never knows who he’ll meet. The second Landon Harrison walks in, he has Rod’s full attention. It seems as if Landon wants him too, so why won't the man jump in the sack with him already?

Landon never thought he’d return home to the town where memories lurk around every corner. He has to admit, Rod makes the adjustment a lot easier. He keeps Landon laughing. Despite the fierce attraction between them, he’s not willing to risk his newfound friendship to get laid.

Neither man wants something serious, but the more they're together, the harder it is to keep their hands to themselves, until eventually they stop trying.

But flings between friends are never simple, and as they attempt to shift gears, diving into their first relationship, they’re slammed with setbacks. If they want to truly move forward, before they hit the open road together, they’re going to have to let go of a past that could make them crash and burn.

Rod Nelson—who we first, hilariously, met in Crossroads—is an easygoing, feel-good kind of guy. He owns his own sex shop (Rods-n-Ends—which—*snort*) and spends his free time engaging in his favorite hobbies, which mostly consists of sex. Lots of sex. He’s a bit of a horndog, this guy. But in a loveable, goofy, and slightly heartbreaking way.

When Landon Harrison starts making frequent visits to his shop, the two eventually strike up a friendly conversation that sets the course for this entire book. They become friends, and then friends-plus, and then way, way more than friends. It's not an easy road and these men broke my heart over and over again as they navigated their way to a happily ever after—but they did it. And the journey was SO worth it.

I loved these guys so much. Both a little damaged in their own ways, but fiercely devoted to and protective of each other. I ached for Rod—who I felt had a harder emotional journey. Most of the bruises left on my heart are from his story. Landon, who battled his own demons, just seemed more centered. He was the unlikely anchor of their relationship. He was strong, and patient, and so wonderfully tender, while also learning the complexities of his own heart and working through some pretty heavy emotional baggage of his own. Their physical chemistry was off the charts in a way that left my Kindle smoking, but they're even sexier for the real emotion and sweetness that blankets their encounters.

I simply loved this story. I love this series. I loved catching up with Nick and Bryce, and seeing how their friendship with Rod (and later, Landon) grew and deepened. There are a lot of light, funny moments here, cushioning the deeper emotional stuff, creating a perfect balance that kept me fully engaged and deeply attached to these men (all of them!).

Be still my beating heart...and my clenching thighs. Perhaps that's a kinda TMI way to start my review but, ahhhh, I just finished Shifting Gears, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't need a fan, a cold shower, my husband, and maybe a cigarette.

I wanted to read this book for two reasons. One, my love for all things Riley Hart. Two, ROD. I adored the first book in this series and one of the absolute highlights was the small but hilarious role Rod played in Bryce and Nick's foray into...err, gayness. Hmm...

So, anyway, I entered *snicker* with high expectations. And I finished with a slightly achy heart from the feels, slightly achy cheeks from the smiling and slightly wet...eyes. Minds out of the gutter, people. (*ahem* Although, it was REALLY hot, so...)

I struggled, especially early on, with Rod, and the slow way Shifting Gears kicked off, but ultimately that slow burn became a vital—and perfect—element of this relationship. For this couple. They needed to ease in because they both suffered from their pasts. And when they eventually went all in, it was worth the wait.

Why? Because Landon. Oh, sweet Jesus, LANDON. I might have occasionally found Rod frustrating (and heart-breaking) but his beau? Loved. From the first to the last, I wanted to have him. He was sort of closed-off, sort of open-minded (I can’t explain, just read) but oh, so irresistible. He was dirty and a little rough around the edges, but he was softer, sweeter for Rod, and he just worked for me. *Sigh*

Add in plenty of Bryce and Nick to reward readers of book one—they're just as swoony, sexy and silly as you remember, BTW—and there were so many things about Shifting Gears that made it a damn good book. I may not have connected with it as quickly or as easily as I did with the excellent Crossroads, but that didn't stop me from embracing every word, thinking about these characters when I couldn't read about them, and hurting inside when the shit hit the fan. Oh, and from melting from the heat Landon and Rod generated... Whoa.

Review - Crossroads by Riley Hart

Title: Crossroads
Author: Riley Hart
Release Date: July 28, 2015

After divorcing the woman he’d been with since he was seventeen, Nick Fuller is starting over. He owns the restaurant of his dreams and he’s determined to meet new people, find new passions, and experience life to its fullest. Easier said than done—that is until he meets his new neighbor, Bryce Tanner…

Bryce is all about a good time. He plans to show Nick how it’s done, help him meet a few women, and enjoy the gift of the single life he’s been given. But things don’t go as planned, and soon they realize they’d rather be together than with anyone else.

Neither man has ever wanted another guy, but there’s a connection between them from the start—a spark they can’t deny. They find themselves navigating an unfamiliar new world and dealing with unforeseen obstacles. Physical desire isn’t enough, and now Nick and Bryce are at a crossroads. They have to decide which way to go: the easy path they’ve always followed, or the one that's determined to trip them up at every turn.

This is a really hard review for me to write because I basically just want to type YES! OH GOD, YES! over and over until you get the idea. I loved this book! Gah, it was basically book perfection: funny, emotional and sexy as all get out. I didn’t want to put it down, couldn’t put it down, and can’t wait until I can pick it up again....for a re-read. Too soon to start, do you think?

After the end of his marriage, Nick Fuller is set on trying his hand at the single life; making friends, getting out more and away from work, embracing the change he wasn’t expecting. But it’s harder than it looks, until he meets his new neighbor, Bryce Tanner.

Bryce has the single life down. Endless women, no commitment, fun. And he’s willing to share that with his new friend, Nick. Except there’s something in the easy way they connect that has both men not wanting to go out and find women and a good time. They just want to be with each other.

It’s a first for both men – being attracted to another guy. Being together means change, hurdles, and possibly, drama. And that means they have a decision to make; take the easy road, or fight for a relationship that neither were expecting, but cannot deny?

*flails* There wasn’t a thing about this book that I didn’t enjoy. It was beautiful in the way it was written, and the neighbors-to-friends-to-lovers story, about two straight men discovering something about themselves (and each other), simply entranced me. It was humorous, easy, real and just *more flailing* amazing. Clearly, I am not cut out for review-writing after just finishing Crossroads but I really, really want to talk about it. It hit all the right notes for me; from start to finish, it spoke to my heart and gave me all the feels.

I was straight-up gleeful reading this book. That’s not to say that I didn’t occasionally hurt inside for the difficult but oh, so right path that Bryce and Nick found themselves on. But they were funny and fun together and their banter, their dirty talk, and their adventures in sex toys overshadowed...no, wait, made up for all the harder emotions, until Riley Hart could have basically done anything with and to these characters and I’d be standing here like, ‘Please, ma’am, can I have some more?’

Not a word of a lie, I finished this book and seriously considering just turning around and reading it all over again. I want to capture that good feeling that it gave me, bottle it up and live off of it. I feel amazing for having read this book, like I found something wonderful and now I get to tell everyone all about it. Incessantly. Until they promise to buy it and read immediately, for fear I’ll talk their ear off. And no one wants that, right? So go buy it, and I’ll stop...deal?

Let’s face it, there are a lot of really good M/M books out there right now. I’ve had the good fortune to read a bunch of them lately. This one? It’s one of the best. I mean, you need to read this book. It took a tremendous amount of restraint to not shouty caps that at you. Nope, can’t do it… YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!

I loved Every. Single. Thing. about this book. It was one of those rare books in which I never lost patience, I never got bored, I was completely tuned in, heart racing, panties soaking the entire time – and when it ended? I wanted to start it all over again. I’m jealous of those of you reading for the first time. You’re in for a treat!

Nick and Bryce are AMAZING. I didn’t really know what I expected going into it, but I definitely did not expect to want to make both of these men my best friends. They’re both so incredibly likeable – in their own right – and as a couple. They’re perfect for each other. Nick is straight laced, serious, and wears his heart on his sleeve. Bryce is a rule-breaker, never serious, and not even a little bit interested in commitment. To watch these men learn how to be in a relationship together was a thing of beauty. It was touching and funny and adorable.

And, sexy.

Sweet Jesus in a crock pot. This book is D-I-R-T-Y in the very best way you can imagine. I kept finding myself glancing around to see if anyone noticed how my legs got squirmy and my breaths got shorter when I read the sexy scenes. Then I’d go back and read the scene all over again because HOT DAMN that’s some sexy shit. Consider this a warning: your panties will be soaked and you may want to consider keeping extra batteries on hand.

That said, their relationship is not without challenges. They have to learn how this new relationship changes who they thought they were individually, while also navigating the way the world they thought they knew changed when they fell in love with another man. Family relationships are challenged, they’re forced to confront some truths about themselves, and there’s basically a lot of growth and maturity going on over the course of the book. It is lovely to read, a joyful journey to bear witness to.

I don’t have a single bad thing to say about this book. In fact, it feels like I could probably fangirl about it forever. It was just this perfect, happy, sweet, sexy read. In case you missed it before? YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!

Review - Rock Solid by Riley Hart

Title: Rock Solid
Series: Rock Solid Construction #1
Author: Riley Hart
Release Date: April 27, 2015

Trevor Dixon has made too many mistakes to count. Sober for thirteen months, he’s determined to do the right thing: rebuild his relationship with his family, and help his brother get Rock Solid Construction off the ground. Failing them again isn’t an option. Too bad the first estimate Trevor goes on alone is for an uptight doctor with a superiority complex.

A hand injury took away the only important thing in Dr. Simon Malone’s life—performing heart surgery. He doesn’t do well with people and has no family, but being a damn good surgeon? He always had that. Now, he doesn’t know who he is. The last thing he wants to deal with is the young construction worker who blows his shot at remodeling Simon’s home.

Trevor and Simon form an unlikely friendship. The more time they spend together, the more Trevor starts wondering if maybe Simon’s not as straight—or uptight—as he thought…and maybe Trevor’s new attraction for Simon runs both ways.

There are too many reasons they shouldn’t be together: they have little in common, their age difference, Trevor needing to focus on his sobriety…yet there’s something about each other that they just can’t shake. They don’t feel so lost when they’re together. But with their footing so unsteady, forming a relationship that’s rock solid seems impossible. There’s blow after blow, and the last one just might be powerful enough to crack their foundation for good.

Read this book. This isn't just a M/M book and it's not just a romance; Rock Solid is beautiful love story with real, broken but strong people trying to find a foundation on which to build a new life. And it's amazing.

Dr. Simon Malone lost everything the night his hand was shattered -- what good is a surgeon who can't wield a scalpel?

Trevor Dixon has done nothing except screw up and, even with over a year's sobriety behind him, he's still making mistakes.

Despite their disastrous first meeting, Simon and Trevor form a friendship that neither expected. And when it becomes something deeper, both have to face their pasts before they can make a future that is Rock Solid.

Oh, how I loved this book. It felt like no time at all had passed, and yet I found myself closing Rock Solid, a little heart bruised and a lot heart happy, after having only picked it up mere hours before.

Simon and Trevor were perfect. Simply perfect in that cracked way -- you know what I mean, right? They're screwed up, messed up, fucked up, but together they're complete and it feels so damn real. Like I could go to this fictional town, find them and they'd be as right there as they are on these pages.

I have not one complaint about this book. Not a single one. Ms. Hart has written a book that's panty-melting, no doubt. But she's also sketched a story about addiction and the daily struggle. About loss and grief and how one copes when the landscape of life is drastically changed. Every single reaction from these men and the people around them felt real and true.

This is my first book by Riley Hart and it categorically will not be my last. I can't wait to see what comes next in this series. My one-click finger is at the ready. 5 Addictive stars.

Can I move into this world of hot men who make out a lot? Please?

This is more than just a story about two men who find love… It’s about overcoming obstacles, facing your past, and coming to terms with the present.

When former addict Trevor goes to make an inspection/quote on a house remodel, he doesn’t expect to find a friend in the owner.

Simon hires Trevor and his company to remodel his new home, but he never planned on finding a friend at the same time…

When the friendship turns to lust, and both men are afraid to act on their feelings, you almost have to stand up and cheer when the first kiss finally happens! I was rooting for these two to finally get their shit together, but then it just got awkward. When they finally realize their true desires for each other, the heat gets turned up. And holy moly, it gets turned way the hell up!

When Trevor and Simon realize their pasts have come back to smack them in the face, will Simon step up and be the man he needs to be? Will Trevor resist his old ways?

Okay, I have to say this: I seriously loved this story. Yes, the sex was hot, but the story was also very moving. It almost seemed personal, and hits you right in the feels. It may not be your story or mine, but it easily relates to us all. We need to be able to reconcile our past to become the person in front of us needs. We also need to let go of the past before we can start living in the present or move on to a future.
