Review - Fly With Me by Chanel Cleeton

Title: Fly With Me
Series: Wild Aces #1
Author: Chanel Cleeton
Release Date: May 3, 2016

From the author of the Capital Confessions Novels comes the first in the steamy Wild Aces Romance series.

U.S. Air Force fighter pilot Noah Miller—call sign Burn—loves nothing more than flying hard and fast. When he meets a gorgeous and sassy woman while partying in Las Vegas, he immediately locks on to her.

Jordan Callahan owns a thriving clothing boutique, but her love life is far less successful. Her luck changes when six feet, two inches of sexy swagger asks her to dance and turns her world upside down.

One scorching weekend becomes an undeniable chemistry that they can’t leave in Vegas. But the long distance relationship and their different lives threaten to ground their romance. And when the dangers of Noah’s job become all too real, Jordan learns being with a fighter pilot means risking it all for a shot at love…

I’m a little dazed right now.

I have all these feelings floating around and I’m struggling to latch on to the one that will most accurately convey how beautiful I thought this book was. Heartwarming. Heartbreaking. Sexy. Flirty. Breathtaking. Even all strung together like that, I feel like those feelings only begin to paint the picture of the emotional journey this book took me on.

From the moment Jordan met Noah on a Vegas dance floor, their chemistry sparked and crackled and left my panties in a terrible state. That said, things didn’t play out exactly how I expected them to. Jordan wasn’t a typical heroine—and I loved her for that, even though I know some of the things about her would drive me crazy if she were a real person. That’s the thing—those things made her feel real to me. She wasn’t perfect, but she was awesome. She was a strong personality; a woman who knows who she is, who knows she’s not perfect, and loves herself anyway. I want to be best friends with Jordan, though I know we would for sure be the kind of best friends who drive each other nuts.

It’s hard to go wrong with a charismatic, confident fighter pilot. Ms. Cleeton did a fantastic job of painting the picture of Noah for me *wipes drool*. As a fan of men in uniform, I was pre-disposed to love Noah like crazy, and I did. He’s another imperfect character—but he’s solid and steady and, though his world gets rocked pretty fiercely, he doesn’t let it all go to shit. As far as book heroes go, Noah is…well…ace.

The secondary character relationships were also amazing. I loved Jordan’s interactions with Noah’s friends. I loved them, and cannot wait to spend more time with them over the course of this series. The friendships were woven beautifully into the romance, adding so much heart and giving the story a richness that hit me right in my reader sweet-spots.

The whole thing felt so real to me. I could imagine this story playing out in real life. There were adorable moments that made me giggle, moments that broke my heart (shattered it, really), and so many moments that took my breath away. If I have a complaint, it’s that I want more. I want to know what happened...after. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye yet, and am hoping (and looking forward) to getting updates on Jordan and Noah as the series goes on.

Fly With Me was a fantastic start to this new series and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here!

*Sniff* I’m not even sure I can handle all these feels right now… On one hand, I am wiping away the tears that streamed—streamed—down my face, and on the other, I’m smiling and swooning and clenching my thighs like I’ve a thigh-master jammed between. (You’re welcome for that visual, BTW).

Oh, what a roller-coaster this book was! Noah and Jordan were damn near perfect together. From their Vegas meet-cute to their long-distance romance—and the pain and grief that they experienced together—they stood side by side as equals, fighting for and working on their relationship, and it was magic.

A lot of that had to do with Noah. Imperfect though he was, inconvenient his career may be, Noah was a cocky gentleman, a dirty-talker, and a man among boys. His comradery with his friends, his willingness to accept emotion and his determination to get it right made me want to embrace him. A lot.

I confess, I wanted to embrace Jordan, also. Although she did, at times, frustrate me a little—for no other reason that she felt a little shallow—she was ideal with Noah, and then… Well, let’s just say she MORE than proved herself. As a lover. As a friend. As a human. She showed growth; a strength and spine that amazed and pleased me, graduating from a glittering jewel to a person of depth and substance. That Chanel Cleeton didn’t have her act in a cliché, contrived manner was a gift—and made the resulting emotion that ravaged me worth each and every tissue I used to get through the pages.

And believe me—getting through some of these pages was rough. The words, the experiences, the grief felt so very raw and painfully real. It hurt—and although I was able to predict what was coming, my ache was no less for it. The friendships that permeate this book are solid and authentic, and beautifully complemented the love that burned (ha, call sign pun!) so brightly between Noah and Jordan.

As the first book in a new series, I hope we’ve not seen the last of this couple. I am intrigued and excited for what’s to come—desperate in some cases for a salve to ease some still-open wounds—but I don’t feel like I am ready yet to leave these two in my rearview mirror. Their ending, although romantic and rewarding and altogether satisfying, felt cut-off. Or maybe it’s just that my emotions are still all over the place, and I’d rather know what comes next for a couple that faced down their obstacles and won, than say goodbye. *Sniff* Damn these pesky feels.

Review - Falling for Danger by Chanel Cleeton

Four years ago Kate Reynolds' fiancé died on a Special Forces mission in Afghanistan. Ever since she's been consumed with uncovering the truth, vowing to prove his death was no accident. Want more sizzling chemistry and scandalous action? Don't miss Books One and Two in the Capital Confessions series, Flirting With Scandal and Playing With Trouble.

Gah, after reading the first two books in this series back-to-back, I was highly anticipating Kate’s story—most especially because of her involvement in Gray and Blair’s relationship. I expected an edge-of-your-seat mystery, a sexy and suspenseful thriller, and I got it…

Kate Reynolds is on a mission. After losing her fiancé, Matt, and distancing herself from her powerful, political family, she’s newly employed by the CIA—and determined to get to the truth of what happened to the only man she has ever loved. The only man she will ever love.

But her curiosity and quest for vengeance puts Kate on a collision course with danger, destruction and death. When it all comes crashing down, Kate is left working with the last man she expected to see—and trying to decide if revenge is still worth the risk to her life…and if finding love again is worth the risk to her heart.

I was a little apprehensive about reading Falling for Danger, mainly because I was unsure how dark and deep Chanel Cleeton would take it. Kate’s role in her sister’s relationship, her poor decision-making, and the way the second book in this series, Playing with Trouble, set-up this book most certainly piqued my interest, even as it left me a little unsure about Kate’s character. Ms. Cleeton did an excellent job of addressing my concerns and making Kate likeable once again, in turn making the experience of reading Falling for Danger a very enjoyable one.

The suspense factor in this book is high—rightly so. I loved the way the mystery of Matt, and his death, played into the overarching story of Senator Reynolds—the father of the three women that make up this series. I also loved how Kate approached solving the riddle, how she involved her rescuer and the blog in her mission, how she interacted with her sisters. It all tied together, and tied-up, the Capital Confessions series as a whole nicely, in a way that was satisfying for those of us that have read all three books. I’d go so far as to say that this book was my favorite of the series, except for the fact that I found the ending of Kate’s story a little rushed, a little convenient…and maybe a little bit incomplete.

As the counter on my Kindle ticked ever closer to 100%, I worried that I would be left with the dreaded cliffhanger—and a part of me thinks I would have preferred that to this ending, which, although believable and, ultimately rewarding, left me a little disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, as I said above, the ending of the series as a whole—how it involved each of the girls and their men—was great. But the reveal, the solution to the mystery was just a little off for me, and I felt more could have been done with it.

Having said that, there was so much more to Falling for Danger that I enjoyed, I would still happily read and recommend it. Although the ending didn’t quite work for me, the rest of the book, from the excellent writing, to the well-placed clues, and the searing, sexy romance between Kate and her beau, absolutely did. I’m sorry to see the end of this series, but very excited to read more from this author in the future.

Review - Playing with Trouble by Chanel Cleeton

Title: Playing with Trouble
Series: Capital Confessions #2
Author: Chanel Cleeton
Release Date: July 21, 2015

The author of Flirting with Scandal presents her second book in a sexy contemporary romance series about three sisters in a powerful political family, the scandals that threaten to destroy them, and the passion that drives them…

The daughter of one of the Senate's most powerful figures, Blair Reynolds was ready to become the ultimate political wife—until she caught her fiancé cheating on her wedding day. Law school is a fresh start, her shot at putting the pieces of her life back together. That’s the plan, at least. Until trouble comes in the form of her Torts professor, the man whose arrogance infuriates her in class but haunts her private fantasies.

Graydon Canter had a fortune and a place on all the hottest "Thirty under Thirty” lists, until a series of personal missteps nearly destroyed his career. A year teaching at a D.C. law school is just the break he needs to get his life back in order, as long as nothing—and no one—trips him up.

When Blair and Gray are forced to work together, their explosive attraction becomes impossible to resist. But Gray’s demons have drawn him dangerously close to the edge, and Blair has spent her life playing by the rules. Will she break them for a shot at love?

Flirty, fun, forbidden. (And something else, starting with ‘F’…) I barely made it 24 hours after finishing Flirting with Scandal before I launched into Playing with Trouble, and I'm glad I didn't make myself wait. I had a grand ol’ time reading this student/teacher romance!

After finding her fiancé cheating – on their wedding day, no less – Blair Reynolds is looking for a fresh start. Starting law school seems like the answer to getting her life back on track, until she gets derailed by her hotter-than-sin, arrogant Torts professor, Graydon Canter.

Working closely on a special project with Gray allows Blair to see past his troubled exterior, to the haunted man inside – a man who, after accomplishing much and experiencing great success, threw it all away and is suffering the consequences of his mistakes.

Perfect Blair has always lived by the rules of her privileged upbringing, but being with Gray means breaking those same rules… Can she make that change for love?

I'm a big fan of forbidden romance, when it comes packaged like this. Playing with Trouble is a very well-written and, I think, well-paced romance, with a healthy dose of dirty. Chanel Cleeton did a great job building the affair between student and professor and offering glimpses into the demons that haunted both Gray and Blair.

I loved how this couple got to know one another through flirting and gentle touches. There's a little bit of instalust here, but it's not instalove, that (sometimes) unfairly maligned element that turns off so many. It's more of an ‘I want you and I can't control it’ feeling than an ‘I met you recently and now pledge my life to you’ one and it just felt right. They both questioned it, too, which also added to that right feeling.

Blair was one of my favorite characters in her brief, but memorable, cameo in the first book of this series, and it was an absolute pleasure to get to know her better. She was something of a contradiction at times – and she asked ‘why’ a lot – which made her more three dimensional. I liked her push, the way she was willing to fight and work to accomplish what she wanted.

Of course, I can't write a review without also commenting on the delish Gray. I mean, just his name is makes me want to swoon, and he definitely had some shiver-worthy moments. I liked his apparent character development, even if it seemed a little backwards at times. Perhaps he frustrated me with his decision-making, his martyr outlook, but it worked and it lead to a happy ending that made me...well, happy.

I'm looking forward to the third book in this series – Kate's book – although some of the set-up for it here fell a touch flat for me. I have a sense of where book three it might be headed and suspect it's going to be more angsty than this more light-hearted installment. It's just too bad I have to wait longer than 24 hours to read it…

ALSO AVAILABLE IN THE CAPITAL CONFESSIONS SERIES

#1 Flirting with Scandal

You know, I’ve never particularly thought of politics or politicians as sexy. Until this book. With its interesting premise, different (especially for me) setting, and some truly enjoyable characters, Flirting With Scandal has me thinking that maybe I should be visiting D.C…or Virginia.

It’s supposed to be a one-night stand for Will Clayton and Jackie Gardner when they meet at a popular bar in Washington D.C. He’s the perfect candidate, currently running for a state senate seat and needing to keep his nose cleaner than clean. She’s the unacknowledged, illegitimate daughter of a powerful politician and interning for a top consulting firm. They both know better than to even flirt with something scandalous.

Except it’s clear that there’s more to their relationship than meets the eye. With a sizzling chemistry they can’t ignore, Will and Jackie have to decide is it’s worth the risk, and the gossip, or if they should walk away before their affair destroys both their careers…

This is my first book by Chanel Cleeton, and it absolutely will not be my last! I really enjoyed this first installment in the Capital Confessions series; with its cheeky blog posts, its roller-coaster love affair, and an interesting and fun role-reversal for the main characters, Flirting With Scandal was able to capture my attention and hold it from start to finish.

I liked both Will and Jackie. And there’s something to be said for the way these two managed to work through their issues. Their communication clearly wasn’t always the best, because SECRETS, but there was a maturity in the way they handled (some) things that I liked. It made the tension and the ‘drama’ (that word sounds bad, but I do not mean it in a bad way!) feel like just enough, and not over-the-top, with craziness and misunderstandings at every turn. But oh, there were some misunderstandings, and some craziness….

And there were some really sweet, tender and freakin’ sexy moments too. Will was…amazing. The perfect blend of charming, sweet and hot, with his manners and thoughtfulness and that mouth that was like, whoa! *Swoon* I loved Blair too, and I am thrilled to see that her book will be the second in this series, and my second by this author. I’m going to get my hands on it ASAP!
