Excerpt

You made the rule, Bella, yet you are the first to break it. That’s not real fair, don’t you think?” I don’t even know how to answer, even if my voice is able to work right now.
Running his hand through his hair in frustration. “How am I supposed to ignore you when you are looking at me like that?” I know he’s trying to provoke me, and I can’t do this. I need to stay strong.
“I think we are finished here.” I stand from my seat and immediately realize that was a stupid move.
“I get to say when we’re finished.” Tate stands and is not more than a foot from me, speaking in a deep sensual voice. “Why did you ask me to flirt with you, Bella, tell me what’s going on inside that beautiful head of yours.” His hand comes up and takes my face in it, slowly tilting my face to look at him, stroking my cheek with his thumb.
“Why did you try to tell me how big your cock is?” I blurt out, losing all rational thought with him touching me so sensually.
“Because I need you to know what you’re getting yourself into. You are confusing me, Bella. I don’t know what you’re trying to say. What do you want me to be to you, tell me? Am I your boss, a friend, or the man who you want more from? You can’t send me these mixed signals and expect me to say nothing. I’ve spent years doing that, and I’m not sure how much longer I can do it.”
I’m panicking, and I know I need to say it’s all a misunderstanding, that all I see is the big brother he has always been, but I can’t bring myself to do it.
I can’t lie.
“I want more,” I whisper. My heart is racing at the way his eyes are on fire. I’ve never seen him look so hot.
“I’ve always wanted more, but we can’t because…” I try to say it, but my words are swallowed by Tate’s mouth taking mine.
His lips demand attention from me, the kind that you can’t ignore and is all consuming. I know this can’t happen so I need to take what I can before I have to walk away. Both his big hands are on my face and one sliding around the back of my neck, pulling me tighter as our mouths thrash together and suck the air from each other’s lungs. My body now flush against his, I can’t stop my hands from grabbing hold of his white coat like I’m never letting go. I’ve dreamed of this moment for so long, I can’t believe it’s happening. All my doctor fantasies are rising to the surface, trying to beg for more. To be honest, they’re only Doctor Tate fantasies, there’s never been anyone else.

Tate starts to slow his kiss, and a soft sigh slips from my lips as he pulls away.
“Bella,” he groans. “Fuck, Bella, we...”
“We can’t do this, Tate.” I pull back quickly and stumble over the chair behind me. Tate grabs me around my waist to steady me.
“Breathe, Bella. It’s okay.” He tries to bring me closer again. I reach to his chest and push him back as I step backwards
My panic has my body now firing on full alert.
“Damn you, Tate, why did you do that,” I whisper angrily. “You’re my boss and my brother’s best friend, for god’s sake. Shit, I need to leave.” As I start to head to the door, Tate is in front of me before I can even get close.
“Like hell you’re leaving just yet. We need to talk about what just happened. What’s been happening for years,” he growls.
“Nothing, nothing’s been happening, and nothing will continue to happen.” I stand there getting angry that I can’t run.
“Bullshit! You can’t tell me you just felt nothing. You wanted that as much as I did. Have the guts to be honest.” He stands there with his fists clenched, when I can tell all he wants to do is reach for me.
“I was just playing the game, you know, like you do with all the other doctors and nurses in this hospital. Isn’t that what you enjoy? Tasting every meal in the smorgasbord?” I can’t believe I just said something so hurtful in my panicked state of trying to hide my emotions.
Tate just stares at me and steps to the side, opening the door.
“If that’s what you believe then I suggest you leave. See you on the ward tomorrow, Doctor Garrett. Message received, loud and clear.” He walks past me with his shoulders a little drooped.
“Tate, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean…” Before I can finish, he’s already walking away.
“Please close the door on your way out, Doctor Garrett.” He then continues to walk into the bathroom in his office and shuts the door.
