Mercurial and charming, Tate Larson is a rising author and playboy who has a different woman on his arm every night of the week. Focused on his work, Tate has no plans to settle down any time soon. That is until he meets his pretty new assistant, Piper Donovan.

Desperate to escape the promise of backwater living, Piper ditched her Alabama hometown and never looked back. That was almost two years ago. Now that she is out of a job and her bank account is running on fumes, she’s desperate to find a job, fast. She finds the break she is searching for when she lands a position at Bookish Temptations. A little dancing and a lot of drinks with the girls seem the perfect way to celebrate. After a brief but explosive encounter with a man she was never supposed to see again turns out to be the same man she will be bending over backwards to please, her every instinct tells her to run. But when running means leaving the life she has struggled so hard to create, Piper decides her only option is to continue working for the devastatingly sexy Tate Larson...even if it kills her.

Unable to deny their growing attraction, they struggle to keep their distance in a relationship that requires anything but.

J.C. Valentine is the alter-ego of Brandi Salazar, whose enjoyment of erotic tales of romance spurred her to branch out and create her own.

Brandi Salazar lives in the Northwest with her husband, their wild children, and far too many pets. As a university student, she studies literature, which goes well with her dream to become an editor. Brandi entertains a number of hobbies including reading and photography, but her first love is writing fiction-in all its forms.

I received an ARC of That First Kiss in exchange for an honest review.

That First Kiss is the second book in the Night Calls Series by J.C. Valentine. The books can be read as standalones, but really the novella Stranded is just as hot, so you’ll probably want to read that too.

Piper Donovan needs her job so she doesn’t have to leave Chicago and return to Alabama, giving up the new life she’s created for herself. With a supportive and comical group of friends, she feels like she has more of a family than ever before. Piper’s problem is that the job she’s so desperate to keep requires her to work for the world’s biggest asshole, Tate Larson.

“The job sounded more like adventures in extreme babysitting if you asked her, but she needed it, so she couldn’t exactly turn it down. Not unless she wanted to reserve a room at chez double-wide for the foreseeable future.”

Sexy and smart, Tate Larson is a passionate author (read: overbearing jerk face) who can’t keep an assistant. With his demanding, domineering, and rude demeanor, the man makes it practically impossible for anyone to put up with him.

“What a man like Tate needs is a good hard slap of reality, a woman strong enough to put him in his place and keep him there.”

What neither expect, is that their mutual attraction coupled with their mutual dislike will cause the sparks to fly… and those sparks are the kind that catch sheets on fire!!!

That First Kiss has some very sexy bits coupled with some very funny bits which result in an exceedingly enjoyable book. Piper and her friend Sheila had me highlighting one-liners so I can try to use them in my own life - and when I do you can trust I will credit J.C. Valentine and send people towards this entertaining and engaging read.

Piper when talking to Tate’s mom about Tate: “No offense, but how does a woman as sweet as yourself give birth to a demon spawn?” {Aahahaaa!! This makes me want to call some of my ex-boyfriends mamas just so I can say that!}

The chemistry between Piper and Tate is so palpable and real I could feel it in my chest. It’s as if they are two magnets repelling each other - all they need is a little flip to be completely inseparable.
I can’t wait for J.C. Valentine’s next book!

5 Stars and a big ol’ smile
