Review ~ Dare to Take by Carly Phillips

Title: Dare to Take
Series: Dare to Love #6
Author: Carly Phillips
Release Date: May 3, 2016

A one night stand.
A secret.
A mistake they tried to forget.

On leave from the army, Tyler Dare was just looking for a little fun, but his sister's best friend is off limits. Yet unable to deny how sexy and alluring she is, he finds it all too easy to succumb to a night of passion and heat that ends the next morning in the worst way possible.

There are just some guys you don't touch—even someone as innocent and inexperienced as Ella Shaw knows that. But when her best friend's brother is up for grabs and willing, she can't resist. After all, she's wanted him for years...

Now, Ella is stranded on a tropical island with a hurricane bearing down, and only Tyler can save her. It's his chance to make amends for the past and show the woman he's never forgotten that he's coming after her...in more ways than one.

Tyler Dare is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. He has a tremendous amount of guilt for a great many things in his past—not the least of which is the night of passion he shared with his sister’s best friend, and the fiasco that ensued. Now, given the chance to set things right, he’s determined to put the past behind him and do just that with Ella.

Ella was devastated by her encounter with Tyler. She’d had a crush on him forever and he effectively ruined her for all other men—in more ways than one. She’s not quick to trust the olive branch that Tyler extends, and once she does, she quickly finds herself in over her head, her feelings for him sweeping her away in a big, confusing, swoony mess.

This was the first book I’ve read in the Dare to Love series. The entire series looked so fun and fascinating, that when the opportunity to review this one dropped into my lap, I couldn’t wait to jump on it (even though I knew I was coming in at the tail end). It worked well as a stand-alone, but I do think my reader experience would have been much sweeter if I had read the others. I feel like if I had been a loyal reader of this series, I would have felt greatly rewarded by the updates given in this book, and the resolution given to the Dare family. As a newcomer—it was still sweet, but I maybe I wasn’t as connected or invested as I might have been if I’d have come into it early on.

However, Dare to Take was a light, fun, devilishly sexy read. As I mentioned, I feel like the fact that I’m late to the series maybe kept me from getting fully attached to the characters, but the story was completely entertaining and the chemistry between Ella and Tyler sparked with heat and intensity.

In all, this was a perfect light beach read, and a heartwarming end to the series.
