Evelyn

I pray to be forgiven for my sins, but the prayers of someone like me won't dare breach the edge of heaven.

Sins. All sins are equal in the eyes of God, but I'm not God. Some sins are far more wretched than others. And those sinners should pay, Evelyn. One sinner made me his sin, and I can't let men like him live. They must face their judgement, Evelyn. I want to kill them. Every. Last. One.

Ezra James is no different, and I wanted to kill him, I needed to kill him, I'm was going to kill him...And then I found myself fascinated by him, obsessed and possessed in the most reverent of ways. I became his sinner, and he became my sin, but the wages of sin is death, so I must kill him.

Ezra

The son of a whore, raised by gangsters, moulded into a key player in a corrupt world ruled by money and completely without morals.

This world can break a person. I’ve seen it time and time again. I never gave a shit, until the night I watched a man drop dead at the feet of a woman so broken she made even me feel whole. My little killer called to my depravity and everything in me demanded that I take her, possess her, own her.

Some monsters hide behind the faces of angels, where others stand in plain sight.

Damned. Broken. Irredeemable.

Through blood, absolution shall be found.

Review - Naked by Gina Gordon

Title: Naked
Series: Body & Soul #1
Author: Gina Gordon
Release Date: January 26, 2016

The deeply sensual Body & Soul series kicks off with “a fun, sexy emotional read” (Lisa Renee Jones), as one woman discovers the courage to face life’s greatest challenges—and explore her connection with a handsome neighbor.

Violet Walker has been hiding. Withdrawn after a terrible car accident, she is worried about going back to her high-pressure job, where she’s expected to project confidence and sleek refinement. Allowing herself a distraction, she’s been watching her sexy neighbor work on his house. But when the shirtless, grinning hunk catches her in the act, Violet is struck by the unmistakable jolt of physical chemistry, a sensation that’s both thrilling and terrifying.

Noah Young is used to moving from one construction job to another, never laying a firm foundation. The same goes for the women in his life—until Violet changes all that. His beautiful voyeur embraces his rough edges and shows him a hint of real love. But even Noah can tell that she’s holding back, hiding her body and her heart from what they both truly want. If only he could get a little help convincing Violet to see herself as he sees her: perfect in every way.

The emotion just sneaks up on you….

Violet Walker and Noah Young are struggling with problems and decisions that are going to affect the rest of their lives. Little did they know their physical attraction would lead to something so deep and powerful…

“F**k. Rinse. Repeat.”

Violet has not had a good year. She is recovering from a devastating car accident that affected her physically and emotionally. Her confidence shaken to its core, she’s working to rebuild who she once was while making plans for her future. Little did she know that the incredibly hot and sexy Noah was going to become part of those dreams. So much for keeping things hot and light...

Noah loves working in construction and is struggling with decisions about his own hopes for his career and those he feels are expected of him. Hooking up with the mysterious, beautiful Violet is a welcome distraction. Their encounters are beyond hot. What these two get up to and where will have you reading with the fan set to high. His growing feelings for her battles against the defenses she has put between herself and the rest of the world. He is, however, more than happy to chip away at that armor, one kiss at a time…

“She was hiding something, and history had taught him that nothing good could come from a woman with secrets.”

Secrets. I agree wholeheartedly with Noah, secrets cause so many problems and heartache. Like a fortune teller, it’s like he predicted the future. Luckily, as a reader, I was privy to them all, though I’m not sure if that made it easier or harder to see the struggles they went through. I wanted to shake both of them, gently of course, and sit them down for a good, long fireside chat. I had to get past all that but once I did the emotional story really opened up for me. Violet was hurting and so alone in her agony. It hurt to see, to feel, the pain she was in. My admiration for her grew; watching her slowly open up to her friends and family—even strangers—to emerge stronger than ever.

The final scenes had my heart aching and cheering at the same time as everything finally came together in an ending that felt so right. The first in a new series, I’m looking forward to learning more about these quirky, interesting characters…
~ Review by Diane

Violet Walker has been in hiding. Technically, I suppose, she’s been working on her first big project as CEO of her family company, but the reality is that, after a devastating car accident, she’s holed up in a small suburban town to hide. In the meantime, though hidden from the rest of the world, she’s desperately trying to find herself. The accident stripped her of everything she thought she was, and the person she thought she was meant to be. While she comes to terms with the person she actually is, she spends her days ogling the sexy neighbor.

When Noah Young weasels a dinner invitation out of the gorgeous new neighbor who has been spying on him from across the street, he thinks he’s found the answers to his problem. He’s lonely. He’s not interested in a lasting commitment. He doesn’t plan to stick around long enough for that—but he can’t deny his attraction to the sexy minx who is equally excited to explore a physical relationship with him.

It doesn’t take long before the sexual attraction morphs into something deeper, and the secrets that were never supposed to be a big deal are suddenly lurking out there like a giant bulldozer waiting to tear this delicate new relationship apart. These feelings will either destroy or heal, but the path to either result isn’t an easy one.

I overall really enjoyed this book, but I wasn’t always sure what to make of Violet. I didn’t always understand where her insecurities were coming from—she played both sides of a coin, and after a while, it became kind of tiresome. There was a theme here that was kind of beaten to death for me, and I kept waiting for Violet to put her big girl panties on and deal with the hand she’d been dealt.

I loved Noah almost immediately—flirty and incorrigible with that hot as hell dirty mouth, it was impossible for me not to love him. I loved his devotion to his family and friends, and how patient he was with Violet. He’s dealing with some insecurities of his own, but he’s mostly got them sorted out. He’s not afraid to take the fall again, even if he knows the impact might kill him.

Together, they’re scorching hot. Whatever they lack in communication, in honesty, they make up for in physical chemistry tenfold. This was one of those books that was uncomfortable for me to read in public because of all the squirmy, breathless feels it kept doling out. There was a sweetness to Violet and Noah that made their heartbreak that much more emotional. I was rooting for them even as I wanted to knock some sense into them.

One of my favorite things in this book was the enormous amount of charm Ms. Gordon gave her side characters. They were all so fun and funny—adding a tremendous amount of depth to the story. However, my very favorite person in this whole book was Harper. I’d read a Harper book in a heartbeat because that girl was a trip. I adored her. I wish I was her or, at the very least, had a friend like her. She singlehandedly took this story to the next level for me.

In the end, it was the last quarter of the book that gripped me most intensely, and it was really a delight to watch Violet come into her own. It was an emotional journey and—despite how frequently I was frustrated with her over the course of the book—I was so proud of Violet. Despite a few bumps in the road, there was a lot to love about this book. It’s a sweet, sexy love story wrapped around a story about learning to love yourself. Definitely worth checking out.

Review - Temptress Unbound by Lisa Cach

Title: Temptress Unbound
Series: 1,001 Erotic Nights #6
Author: Lisa Cach
Release Date: January 25, 2016

The sensuous sixth story in national bestselling author Lisa Cach’s passionate Fifty Shades of Grey meets Game of Thrones series about a young Roman Empire slave who, after being tutored in the sexual arts by her king, runs away to save her life.

Once trained in the carnal arts to be the king’s concubine, Nimia has a prophetic gift that is triggered by her sexual encounters. Finally free, she forsakes the powerful men who have used her gifts for their own gain. As her sexual adventures continue, she searches for true love—and for her people, the Phanne, from whom she was originally stolen.

Erotic and lyrical at the same time…

How could I not be intrigued by a story described as a mix of Fifty Shades of Grey and Game of Thrones? What I should have also read more closely was that this was the sixth part of a continuing story. I was lost for a good while when I started this novella as the assumption was I knew who everyone was and what they were up to. This is the first book in the series I’ve read and other than that misstep, I couldn’t be happier to have stumbled on this quiet gem.

Set in what I believe to be the time of old world Britain, characters such as Arthur and Maerlin take center stage. It took a while for me to understand what I was actually reading as the events surrounding these legendary names only became more familiar the more I read.

Nimia is one of the Phanne, people with magical gifts including those of prophecy. What has brought her to this point in time, with these people, sounds like an incredible journey with this another emotional chapter along a trip still underway… She knew love and friendship, loyalty and loss, and felt each emotion keenly. With Terix and Una by her side, and Brenn at her back, she was able to meet each challenge. So much is said so simply that it seemed to heighten those feelings even more. As Nimia learnt more about herself and the people around her, she and her world became more and more intriguing…

This story brought back so many of the classics to mind—tales I haven’t read in way too long. King Arthur, Robin Hood, Tolkien—fantastical stories of quests, honor, love and friendship. The feel, the texture of the writing, felt so… musical almost. You know, when the writing is very precise, almost formal yet poetic at the same time? What I didn’t expect was the bawdiness of the prose and the humor that popped up unexpectedly. You would think that it would be an awkward mix yet it was so natural and thoroughly enjoyable.

“You stink of weeds and humping hedgehogs, you have green pond water flowing in your veins, and a farmer’s crotch after a day of plowing under the sun is far sweeter than the air that breathes from your mouth.”
“You shouldn’t anger a woman who’s soon going to have her hands on your balls…”

As I was reading I wasn’t sure how to accurately describe the story. Was it romantic adventure? Magical fantasy? A tale of chivalry and betrayal? I quickly decided I wasn’t going to try to label it but enjoy it for what it was—great storytelling with all those elements combined with love at the heart of it. Bravery, chivalry, action and adventure—add in love and sex that is part of humanity no matter what the date on the calendar—and you have a story that I couldn’t help but get lost in.

Excerpt

If I thought I was going to make a speedy getaway, I was wrong. My savior caught up to me, half way down the walk, outside the finance building. He was quick and a large hand wrapped around my upper arm.

“Whoa, sister,” he said, slightly out of breath. “You almost got away from me again.”

“What?” I questioned. I had no idea what he meant: again.

“Never mind,” he muttered, his hand still on me. I looked down at it and he immediately released me. My eyes pinched as I realized I didn’t mind his hand on my skin. There was something nonthreatening about him. He seemed rather innocent, studious, actually. His shirt was buttoned almost to the top and tucked into his pants. The sleeves secure at the cuffs. His jeans were snug and hugged him well. He wore dark rimmed glasses that screamed smart. Brown boots looked too new on his large feet. It was like he had the right parts but the wrong combination.

His blue eyes were soft and easy to look into. They practically spoke to me, but I had no idea what he was saying. His dark hair was disheveled, a bit shaggy, but cool looking. He kind of looked like a pop star, which was a little too sugar sweet for me. His form was questionable. It was hard to tell what kind of body he had under those clothes. He looked rather preppy, like half the guys at this university. I didn’t want to think about it. I’d just sold my soul for another semester.

“So when do you want to do this?” I asked. His blank stare told me he had no idea what I meant.

“Us,” I said, pointing between him and me.

“I…” His voice trailed off as he gawked at me. His expression changed from confusion to shock.

“I didn’t buy you to sleep with you,” he said, a touch of disbelief in his voice. His face turned crimson, then fell. “Why, have you done that before?” It was my turn to be surprised and offended.

I turned on my heels and began stomping away from him. He was too quick and he caught me again. His hand on my arm halted me. This time he didn’t release me when I peered down at his fingers wrapped around my bicep.

“Look. I need help,” he blurted. His face pinked a little, and it was sweet. “I don’t need help with sex. I need help with before.” His tone dropped, and he looked side to side to see if anyone would hear him. I took his meaning.

“You don’t know how to do foreplay?” I questioned in a loud whisper, trying to hide my astonishment. How could anyone have sex and not know a touch of foreplay?

His face pinked again.

“Not that,” he said, sounding like a child. “The flirting. The dating. The…other stuff.”

I was stunned. I stared at him, taking in his features again. He was kind of cute, leaning toward the potential for good looking. He couldn’t possibly need help with this request. The confusion on my face made him speak.

“I don’t know how to flirt.” The words swirled between us.

“I don’t understand.” I didn’t. I didn’t know what he wanted from me.

“I need lessons how to be…cool: with girls. Call it a tutoring session. I need to learn how to be…seen.” His voice took on a touch of sadness. He couldn’t possibly be serious. I continued to stare at him. My mouth might have actually dropped open a bit, and I noticed he was watching my lips. It was a little exciting the way he stared at them. I licked them and his pupils dilated, filling in more black over the blue. His expression changed. Knowingly, he blinked when he realized I was teasing him. His lip quirked up and a dimple showed in his cheek.

“I need to date you,” he blurted. “To learn how to do, what you just did to me.”
